Looking seriously nice!

bit grubby.
In a Terry Thomas/Graham Hill stylee "Heeelloooooooo".
Do you think the disc will catch on in the race scene? bearing in mind how little breaking goes on. I don't see the point really, but that said I'll be building a winter cross/hybrid/700c/on/off trainer with discs for next year.
That's what people said about disks v V's in the MTB scene. The better the braking the quicker you go, stands true in motorsport as well.
I don't expect to see a whole bunch of pro's on BB7's though.
Shimano etc are all working on hydraulic drop bar gear shifters/brakes (shimano already had DCL mtb levers don't forget) so it won't be long before 'proper' lightweight road/CX brakes turn up that work with drop bars.
um, what follows is little more than a total guess.
disc brakes will catch on in cyclo cross because:
a) they're new, new is cool.
b) rims can be a bit lighter.
c) rim brakes are horrible to use when it's muddy
d) rim brakes are horrible to set up.
just the ticket that - might want to tone down the stickerage a touch though!
Spose they will at some point. Agree they were a revalation in mountainbiking. Just with road racing and cross racing the brakes are hardly ever used, and then it's for the slightest scrubbing off of speed.
I use my brakes far more when I'm not racing though, and tbh good dual pivots are excelent, todays 100k trial was a good test of them. At pone point we got cut up by a car that had to brake to a halt, if I think about that, a disc on a road bike with 23cs in the wet would have probably bought on a skid.
I've been avoiding the disc brakes vs. CX bike argument till now, but frankly I think its a real shame that soon you won't be able to buy good CX bikes with rim brakes, I've just ridden mine through the winter, deep snow, mud, rain, and was very glad not to have to endure the vagaries of disc brakes, the sticky pistons, the tiny tolerances, the screeching pads.
I mean, since when were CX bikes supposed to be practical anyway?

is there a different max tyre size for rim/ disc brake users in racing? i have been told there is.

My Hope Mini's had that problem about 7 years ago - no disc brake I've owned for the past 5 years as been anythign other than trouble free...
Hmmph. Just me then.
Is someone going to make a better and lighter version of the BB7? I am SO underwhelmed by mine.
Am liking the cable solution under the top tube.

I've taken the BB7 of the back of mine, replacing it with canti. I've left the front disc on though.
Why? - it 'sang' to much, which annoyed me on road. It was adding weight to the bike, without really being necessary - I can stop plenty quickly. I 'upgraded' a bike part and saved money! - at least until the rim wears out......
Discs will take off - European pro racers will use them because that's what their bikes are supplied with.
Cross bikes will continue their steady trend as crossover bikes - essentially hybrids with drop bars.
It also suggests that the 135mm standard will become the norm for most bikes, including road race bikes.
OMITN are you H G Wells?

I noticed this, nice gentle relaxed angles and mountainbike brakes, this is what 29ers are for isn't it?
cross racing the brakes are hardly ever used
I don't understand how this applies to cross racing. I brake hard into most corners in cross races, especially on the faster courses or towards the end of a race where outbraking someone is a good way of passing without expending too much energy. Well set up cantis are good enough in the dry, but I think the pros will use discs in the wet when good hydros become available.

c) is the main one - cantis can be as powerful as you need (given the back wheel has **** all grip braking) but it's the cleanliness and lack of faff (13FM you oughtta try BB5/7s) that does it for me.
I don't think the rims actually end up much lighter.
OMITN are you H G Wells?
I've seen the future. And it's murder.

I did, they're lovely but horrendously noisy ๐
I'm sure I could fix it but it would require new rotors or new pads or some other such expense, but thats another topic.
That Merida has a sort of curious hunched and ready look about it, sort of like a cat, pre-pounce. I like.
That Merida is the same geometry as their canti based race bike this year, so its not one of the new "monster cross" bikes with slightly less racing based angles.
Me? I like it.
I'd expect to see a lot of other manufactures producing disk based frames this year, and then Shimano and SRAM coming out next year with proper STi and disk integration.
Then we just need to wait for the wheel/hub manufactures.
The sooner road as well as CX bikes go hydraulic discs the better, better stopping, look better, it will be driven by what the pro ride, would expect (hope) by 2013 Shimano will be testing, production in 2014, as doubt they will do much before the Olympics, althouth this could also be where they do inovate.

yeah, that geometry comment was aimed at the Whyte CX bike on Bikeradar, which even admits to 'trundling' which is not a description I'd use for CX bikes normally!
Worst. Reason. Ever. ๐look better
