Just wondering if a 2.8 Magic Mary will fit on a 29er non-boost Pike. The rims are 35mm internal. Has anyone run this combination?

Assuming you mean by+, pretty sure the non-boost pike would clear a 3.0 purgatory, albeit quite snugly- not quite the answer but it might give you a point of comparison?

I used to run a 2.8 Nobby Nic on a non-boost Pike, with 35mm internal rims - which may be partially relevant.

It was OK in the dry but once the tyre picked up a bit of mud the rubbing would be too annoying to bear.

Mary might be more nobby than the Nic as well.

I'd say not a chance of working in anything other than bone dry conditions.
I was an early adaptor of +tyres when boost forks where few an far between.
Even back then on 35mm rims the few 2.8 tyres that existed although being very undersize and not having many knobs only just fitted in the dry.

Again, not the answer asked for but I’ve got 2.3 Vigilante in a 27.5 non boost Pike on a 35mm internal rim. It’s tight enough I’ll be paying very close attention in mud and won’t be running even a foldy plastic mudguard. I ran the same combo in a 29 boost Yari and there was acres of space. For ref, the 2.3 Vigilante on i35 ends up about the same as the 2.8 Ranger sizewise.

If you haven’t got the fork yet and want the big rubber, buy Boost.

Well I have a non-boost 29er pike and run 2.8 maxxis tyres on 35mm rims. They fit but I wouldn't want them any bigger, and I think schwalbe's come up a bit bigger than maxxis.

Thanks Dave. Which Maxxis tyre do you run on the front and do you use a mudguard?

I have a NN 2.8 on a 27.5 Yari non boost on 30mm internal. No space for a mud guard and just enough for a little mud. I don't know how much more space the 29 gives but I know the MM has bigger knobs so I would assume it's only ever going to work in dry conditions

Either a DHF or a Rekon depending on conditions. There's just about enough room for a muckynuts front guard in there too.

Great, thanks. I wonder if a DHRII would fit in 2.8?

Well you can definitely run a Nic with a thin mudguard... In the dry.

You planning on riding in slop?

I decided just to get the Magic Mary and try it. I've fitted it on and clearance looks okay. I'll try it out and see if there are any issues. Thanks for all your help chaps!

I’ve been using exactly this combo for just over a year. No problems at all.

How do you find the 2.8 Magic Mary in winter conditions? What do you run on the back?

Mate has one in a non boost 29er. With a mudguard. Seems like you’ve found that out for yourself!

I’m a massive fan of the 2.8 MM in the slop. Fantastic grip and predictable slide when it does finally go. I run a Maxxis ForeCaster on the back in 2.6 width. Nowhere near as grippy but a good compromise between rolling resistance and traction.
