[Closed] 2.6 tyres on 25mm rims a bad idea?

I’m having a set of 29er wheels made on wtb sti 25 rims, they were initially for running road tyres on my Vaya but I’m smitten on the new MK4 stooge and could use them to run 2.6 tyres on it or do I need to consider wider rims.

It's not so long ago we used to run 2.3 tyres on 17mm mavic rims, only issue will be tyre roll in corners...

I still It’s not so long ago we used to run 2.3 tyres on 17mm mavic rims, only issue will be tyre roll in corners… is not running silly low tyre pressures

WTB will say it's fine. Maxxis say you won't. WTB 2.6 are wider than Maxxis.

You'll be fine.

If you're still deciding, and you can change your mind, and they're only going on the stooge with big tyres on, you'd probably be better off with wider rims. Especially if there's a chance you might want to try bigger tyres, at least in the front.

If they're going to be used on different bikes and more than 25 would be too much for the other use, then just crack on. It'll be absolutely fine. I'm not sure I'd notice the difference between 25mm rim and 30mm rim anyway.

I had a blast round BPW with a 2.75" Dirt Wizard on 25i Flow. I had a lot of fun, didn't die, and didn't spend any time wishing I had a wider rim.

I’ve got 29x3.0 surly knards on 23mm id tims. They are fine. You just have to be realistic about tyre pressure.

Sounds ok to me tyre pressure not crucial also gives me the option to run a fast road tyre on them for the Vaya if I so choose

I had a 2.6 Nobby Nic on a 22.5mm internal rim on the rear for a while. I found the tyre squirm could get dangerous when really pushing hard leaned over, like when popping off the end of a berm, but I had no problems otherwise. Since upping to 30mm internal I haven't noticed the same problem at the same (perhaps lower) pressures.

How about run a 2.4 out back and 2.6 up front? You'll likely not be loading the front as much as the rear on a Stooge

Nobby nics are a fairly light tyre though, I wouldn't base my tyre size choice on them, plenty other 2.6 tyres with more supportive sidewalls.

2.6 inch tyres are GREAT.

From i.d. 30mm the fun starts.
I run mine (MagicMary) on 35 mm i.d. rims. A blast!

Will they work? yes.

Will it be ideal? no.

Will you die? eventually, but probably not because of this.

Seems the consensus of opinion here and on other forums is a 30mm internal rim is ideal

Should be the default reply to most of this forum, including threads I start myself...

I cadged a split Shorty 2.5WT off someone to see what it looked like on my Flow EX rim (25.5mm) in comparison to a 2.3 Shorty on an original Flow rim (22.6) and I couldn't see any obvious difference in shape/profile. I am convinced enough to give a WT a go once my tyre is worn out.
