Evening, All.

I want to run a 1X10 setup on my Trance X and am looking at a narrow wide 32T ring up front and 11-36 ten speed cassette. I presume I need a 10 speed specific chain (the cassette will be XT), but the RD puzzles me because some say medium cage, others say long... I'll go clutch mech, whatever.

What do you think?

Many thanks,

Dom

I'd go Zee mech personally. Keep it short.

I'm running that setup on a medium cage. It's grand.

The rear will tell you what it's maximum size is (biggest front + biggest rear) but normally med will be fine.

With a zee mech make sure you get the FR version to handle wide range cassette.

Did the swap from 1x9 to 1x10 last weekend and works a treat with Zee!

The confusion is probably that Shimano makes three cage lengths:

Short (In Zee form these come as two different connector lengths too, Fr and DH, although the cage length is the same).
"Long" (GS) - which is what most people refer to as medium.
"Super Long" (SGS).

The rear will tell you what it's maximum size is (biggest front + biggest rear) but normally med will be fine.

Not quite right I think. The rear mech number refers to how much slack the cage can accommodate. It doesn't really matter whether it's on the front rings or back or whatever. E.g. the amount of slack in an 11-36 cassette is labelled as 25 teeth. If you have a 14t difference between your two front rings (E.g. a 24t and a 38t) then the mech needs to accommodate a chain growth potential of 39t.

Shimano Medium (or 'long' / GS as above) will happily accommodate 2x10 never mind 1x10. Don't overcomplicate it though:

Short cage = 1x
Medium cage (GS) = 2x
Long cage (SGS) = 3x

Short or medium cage will both work fine,
I run a short cage on my 1x9 set up an it's fine

Yep - I'm currently running that exact set-up with a Zee mech.

As above, make sure you get the FR to accommodate the wide ratio cassette.

No need for any chain device, that sucker ain't going nowhere.
