With that handy CRC code (thanks!) I've just splashed out on a 10 speed drive train to replace my worn out 2x9.

I am toying with trying 1x10 but thought a good first port of call would be to just keep my original XT triple and run it with no mech before thinking of a new NW chainring or expander sprocket.

I am using the 22t and 32t with a bash on the outside. I had a cunning plan that I could leave the 22t in place for now so in emergencies I can manually drop the chain to granny ring.

My question is - will I need some sort of chain device or is there any chance it will just stay on the 32 ring with no front mech? I think the bash will prevent the chain coming off the outside - but no help on the inside. The new rear mech is a shadow+

You'll probably need a new chain ring that doesn't have any shifting pins/ramps. If you don’t want to fit a chain device the best thing to try first is narrow wide chain ring by Hope, Race Face, etc.

I would go for a narrow wide, not the cheapest option but will suit what you want and will actually work.

I'm confused, surely if you want to trial a 1x10 set up to see if it's for you or not you would just stick it in the middle up front and do your local riding without using the granny? If it works and you get on ok with it then rip it all off and stick a NW on?

johnnyboy - sorry I forgot to mention that my front mech is playing up badly which is half the reason I want rid of it. it would be nice to be able to take it off asap as it is impossible to adjust correctly (wrong mech for the frame/chainset)

On my old 11-32 casette I would not have been happy with just my 32t chainring. Now I have an 11-36 casette perhaps I'll try out a 30t ring and see how it goes. Thanks for pointing out the cheap on-one chainrings - £25 doesnt seem so bad even if I decide to switch back.

There are so many cheap second hand front mechs and shifters around second hand at the moment. If you don't like it you can probably shift the NW ring and get a mech and shifter for peanuts.

Just make sure if you get a 30t chainring that it is compatible with your cranks. I've just gone for a 32t and just about got away with it (the chain might foul the cranks where they are bolted to the chainring if your unlucky).

Went out for my first ride since changing from 2x10 XT last night. 11-36 gave me more than ample range. Chain didnt drop either over some extremely rough ground. I've got a Hope N/W and a clutch mech (didnt have the clutch turned on either...)

I tried similar thing, tried using middle chainring from a triple without a derailleur, was a nightmare with chain coming off. Put the big chainring on as well and just ran on middle ring and the chain came off less but was still a pest.
It was helpful though in deciding what size NW to get.

Ah good to hear some first hand experience! I just ordered an on-one 30t - I wonder if it will fit the middle position on my XT triple?

I did the same with the CRC code but went the whole hog.

- XT 11-36, medium mech & shifter, sram chain, E13 42T extender and Blackspire NW 32T. All around 25% off.

Thanks CRC
