hello
looking at the 2017 models of the ragley marley, i found two models (the marley 1.0 and the 2.0). when, at first i couldn't spot the difference i looked into the specs and found the 1.0 to be a 1x chain ring at the front with no front derailleur. The 2.0 however had a 2x chain thing and did have a front derailleur. So i was thinking which one, bar the other differences in components, would i choose and what were the advantages and disadvantages to both. Basically what would your preference be and why to give me some insight into the matter.

It's completely personal really, depending on what riding you intend to do and if you prefer the simplicity of 1X over the broader range of 2X...

If in doubt I would suggest 2X as it will cover more bases...

Edit: sorry my own preference would be 1X, I like my MTB simple and I can climb well enough with it...

Agree with cookeaa, it's more down to personal preference. If you do long days in the saddle with lots of rolling hills and many miles of riding then 2x is more suited to this than trail centre riding for example. Another big decider between the 2 is how much you care/notice jumps between gears.

I'm still on 2x9 as my parts are yet to wear out however when they do I see 2x10 or something similar being my preference as I like to spin rather than stomp and dislike the larger differences in ratios that 1x brings with it.

I do like the simplicity concept of 1x however I don't use a dropper currently so don't need the space on the bars and the bike's an 09 and I haven't really had to touch the front gears much in terms of maintenance.

Even though I'm an advocate of 1x I wouldn't buy a frame that couldn't take a front derailleur. Whichever you choose is down to personal preference.

Have to disagree with 2x being more suited to long distance stuff, I was out today in the Dales - 93Km of riding with 1800m of ascent and I was fine with 1x10 on my 29er. By the time I can't pedal up stuff it's not because of lack of gears but lack of traction or simple hike-a-bike. I'll be using the same setup on the Highland Trail in May.

Depends how/where you ride. I much prefer x1 for my circumstances but making sweeping statements about one of the other is absurd if we don't know more.

Hi. The other replies give valid points. Personally i've both.A 2x hardtail which i now appreciate how well 2x10speed,28-40t with 11-36cassette suits the bike and where i Usually ride, i only say this after getting a 1x, which i only got as was a really good deal on its frame, fork, shock kit. While it is a excellent bike at going up and down, i find my 1x11 drivetrain which i set up close as i could to my 2x, 36t and 11-46cassette, i find the overall gearing is good , ie low gear is same as my 2x , top gear is about ½-¾ of a gear down on my 2x which is okay, but it's the big gaps between gears which stop the flow and the big gaps on hills can cause having to choose too high or low a gear to climb in. being fairly fit i can handle it , but don't like the loss of flow, but it's all about compromise. So I'd say if you got the 2x see how you get on with it, then lend or hire a 1x for a couple of hours to see how you like it. Because if you get 1x and it can't take a front mech, and you find you don't get on with it your stuck with it.

It's a personal preference as the others say. But in terms of pure spec, the 1x version gets a nicer fork but the drivetrain parts are really pretty basic. Whereas the 2x still gets a decent fork but the drivetrain parts are a bit nicer. So it's not really a like-for-like.

There's hardly any difference in gaps betweeen an 11-42 11 speed and 11-36 10 speed cassette though.
