[Closed] 1/8th SS chain fouling on bashring - is an 8 Speed chain the answer?

Just bought a slot dropout Inbred 29er and have been tinkering with the back end to sort out the chain.

I'm running an On One rear cog and a Raceface Ride SS chainset (34t) but the 1/8th chain i bought (cheap wippermann from CRC) catches the bashguard as does the Sram PC7X from my 26" ss when i tried that. This is annoyingly noisy and causing the chain to skip as it catches the even wider 3 part joining pin.

Don't want to remove the bashguard so would the easiest solution be to simply swap to a 3/32nd 8 speed chain which is just a bit narrower?

I was hoping to use a ss chain rather than 8/9 speed as i assume it would be stronger. Any suggestions for an 8sp chain or a solution to the problem?

Cheers

Put the split link in from the other side to stop it catching.
The chain will soon wear groves into the bash and not catch any more.

The chain catches all over though, it's just worse at the linking plates.

Not sure of how the bashguard fits exactly but would it be possible to shim it out slightly with some washers so it's pushed very slightly further away from the chainline?

I know you are using a SS Chainset, but are you using actual 1/8th Chainring and sprocket? If they are just SS 3/32 then just use a 3/32 SS chain

Who does a ss specific 3/32 chain then?

All the ones i can find are for 8sp systems.

Check out Charlie the Bikemonger's website - he has answers. He'll also remove your cash from you and give you shiny things in return.

ime any 3/32 chain works as well as a SS specific one. i find 1/8 chains noisy unless both ring and sprocket are 1/8 too.

a SS chain is always going to run straight, not bent like it is a lot of the time with regular gears, cutting down on wear etc. i'd not worry about having a ss chain personally.

Proper 3/32 SS chains are different in design to 8 spd ones. They have a bush between the inner plates, rather than just having the metal of the plates turned in.
I got an Izumi one from fleabay. £16. Japanesey shinyness. job done.

Just bought a KMC 3/32 ss for my first ss and it slips and clunks like nobody's business. Had to put the old 9 speed chain on. not sure whats going on with it.

The KMC 610-HX is an excellent chain, in my experience.

If that's what you've just bought then it will be fine, as long as you're running it on a good singlespeed chainring and sprocket.

And how can a properly tensioned chain on a singlespeed "slip" anyway??

Just looked and mine is a KMC 610-HX. Rings are in very good nick as the bike is virtually new. The ring ont back isn't thicker than a normal 9 speed ring though. Could that be the problem. Works fine with the 9 speed chain and I think an 8 speed chain.
