[Closed] 150mm RP23 Shock on a Yeti?

[#6409560]

Wondering if you guys could help me, I'm thinking of getting a Yeti ASR 5 that has a 150mm shock fitted, however the frame is designed around a 127mm shock.

Question is, could someone like loco tuning reduce the travel for me, and if so how much would it cost?

Thanks for reading 🙂

There's no such thing as a 150mm travel shock as such- the amount of travel a bike has depends on the swingarm to shock stroke ratio really, as the swingarm is essentially just a big lever: the longer the lever, the bigger the travel. That's a pretty basic explanation of it, but that's the fundamental principle.

ASR5s use a 200x57mm shock(i think.) If someone's fitted a shock with a longer stroke, they've potentially turned the bike into a death trap. If they've fitted a shock with a longer I2I length, they've ruined the geometry of an amazing bike.

You'd be better off trying to find a cheap 2nd hand shock, rather than bodging one to fit, that's too long to begin with.

Ok thanks but now I'm confused, doing abit of googling tells me the shock eye-to-eye is the same length on both the ASR5 and 575! Surely it must be wrong?!

Quote from Yeti Owners manual says: 'The ASR5 uses a 2.0 inch stroke, 7.875 inch eye to eye shock, by Fox Racing Shox'

Yeti 575 Quote: 'The 575 uses a 2.0 inch stroke, 7.875 inch eye to eye shock, by Fox Racing Shox'

Both same size 200 X 50mm/7.875 X 2.0".

Thanks Loco

So would I actually notice any difference I wonder? basically the guy has put his shock from a Yeti 575 into an ASR5 but other than difference in travel I guess it wouldn't hurt?

Should be fine, can be retuned at service time if necessary

Yer bad idea or you'll have to increase your spring rate..
(suspension joke intended) 😆

Timbob,

If you are after a RP23 200x50mm I'll be selling one over the next couple of weeks as I strip my bike ready for the new one...

From what you've said, both the ASR5 and the 575 use exactly the same shock (200mm length, 50mm travel). So you wouldn't gain wheel travel, or change the geometry - nothing would change (except perhaps the damping tune).

What you're talking about is rear wheel travel, and yes the ASR5 is 127mm and the 575 is 150mm. But that's a function of the whole suspension design, not only the shock.

Thanks for clarifying Superficial. Makes more sense now 😉

Thanks for offers on shocks but I'll now just keep the one that will come with the frame.
