Hey.
I recently upgraded to 11 Speed XT. Despite it working perfectly and being awesome for the first few rides. After 2 weeks and 140 ish miles it started creaking in certain sprockets. Couldn't really get to the bottom of it, after messing around with myself.
So took it to my LBS and the chain (Ultregra 11 speed, which is recommended by shimano) was pretty much worn out, and the cassette was also showing signs of being worn out too. I Put a new chain on it and its been ok since....but I'm a little concerned that it appears to be wearing out so quick.
I ride XC and marathon stuff and its on a carbon hardtail 29er.
Anyone got any experiences with its durability.
Road bike based but my Ultegra 11 speed stuff on the winter bike has lasted much better than the 10sp it replaced.
Was it set up properly (limit screws and b-tension set correctly, good chainline, correct number of BB spacers etc)?
The one thing that puts me off going 1x11 just yet is the question of longevity.
Yes. Set up by a trusted local bikeshop.....
I am running it with a Hope front ring, rather than shimano, however I've spoken to hope and they've said thats not an issue.
I've done abpout 150Km on mine seems Ok so far, running mine 1 x 11
So everything was new, and the chain has worn out in 140 miles?
Something seems wrong, or was that 140 miles riding in the rain on a beach? ๐
Ha ha. No, I live in Shropshire, no where near the coast, some of the trails I ride have sections of sand, but nothing major. Its never been an issue before. I'm intending to take it back tomorrow for another inspection.
It is amazing though...when its not wearing out!
and when I say "sand" I mean....sandstone really
the XTR (and Dura-Ace) suffers from creaking on the carbon carrier, whats the XT made from?
chuck your chain checker in the bin
just run everything until it dies, like massively dies, chuck it all in the bin and replace everything at the same time, only XT aint it, not costly to replace, you should get thousands of miles if you run everything together

That's a terrible idea. Can you imagine doing the same thing with your car? Just replace the chain when needed. At least your gears with always work right.
That's ridiculous, how can you compare a bikes drivetrain to replacing a car, especially when all the XT bits cost less than an annual service. And how yours gears work by just replacing a chain is crap, both the rear cassette and front ring(s) wear with the chain and they all wear "mesh" together.
