hello
I'm building up a winter hardtail and have a new donor bike with a full new 1x11 xt groupset . However the thought of anything bigger than a 11-36 cassette on my mtb makes me want to puke.
So can I use e.g an 11 speed ultegra cassette 11-32 cassette on my deore hubs that the xt 11 cassette is currently residing on?

Thanks in advance . Sorry if this has been asked before

Thank for the 'to the point' answer @scotroutes

@robgclarkson
11- 40t is not necessary for me and I way prefer the feeling of a more gradual change between cogs than this rebranded mega range malarkey . I get over every mountain/hill in the uk on my 1x10 11-32 setup on my Slash and single speed everything else on my other hardtail.

But if its not compatible I'll sling a 10 speed group on there and sell the M8000 stuff.

Road 11spd is a wider cassette. So as above, no

An 11speed road freehub is 1.85mm wider, so the only way it will fit is to machine that off the freehub to make it wider or off the cassette spider to make it narrower.

I have just ground down the splines a bit more and 11 will fit.

A road 11sp cassette has a different pitch to a mtb 11sp one, doesn't it ?

Machining the freehub might allow it to fit on but the shifting would still be off, if so

(I've ground off a road 10sp freehub and road 11sp cassette to get it to (just) fit)

It all works perfectly if you grind the free hub. Be careful and I suppose that certain wheel/cassette/mechs might not work. I Must admit to not trying smaller than a 28t big sprocket though.
