Looking at a Shimano HG500 or Sunrace MX3 in 10 speed 11-42 ratio. Looking for few more gears than my current 11-36 set up.
Both look similar on paper - any experience with either?
Cheers.
I've just ordered the Sunrace MX3 from bikediscount.de, as I also wanted a bit more range than 11-36. I looked at both but the grams saving per £ seemed worthwhile on the Sunrace so I went for that. Reviews seem good. It might arrive today so will update as soon as it's on the bike.
The red spiders on the Sunrace look nice, plus the lower weight sold it to me. So far so good.
I did this on my CdF. The Shimano cassette was a bargain on one of the German sites. The ratios were the same. Easy choice. Just works with a Chinese wolf link.
I have the 11-40 MX3 on my cross bike, shifting seems as good as the SRAM 11-32 it replaced with an XT mech and SRAM chain. Seems good so far.
Run a Sunrace on the fat-bike, so far so good - can't see any reason at all why I won't stick one on the hardtail when the chain & cogs are due for replacement there.
Currently in the same position myself, looking at either the Shimano or the Sunrace. The Sunrace is lighter, and the black looks really cool. The ratios are NOT the same as stated above, where the Sunrace uses a 36 then a 42 the Shimano uses a 37 then a 42.
I am probably going to go Sunrace purely for aesthetics.
Just trashed my first mx3 after 18 months, folded the big cog starting off.
The new one has a much beefier big cog, so should last out my 10 speed days.
Shimano cheap at merlin

Having had Sunrace for my last two cassettes, the expensive and cheaper 10 speed 11 to 42 cassettes, I have just fitted a Shimano hg500.
The shifting is definitely better with the Shimano. Not much in it but it's better.
Cheers for the responses - Shimano winning so far as is half the cost of the sunrace. But then the sunrace does look better in chrome black...
I have the Sunrace MS3 11-42T 10 speed cassette. No complaints but the shifting isn't quite as crisp as shimano cassettes i have used in the past.
Just using a bog standard long cage standard capacity rear mech no goat link or similar.
Sunrace for me on my Pro2 hubs as the larger cogs are on carriers so won't damage the Aluminium freehub.
Also, weight and blackness FTW.
The 11-42 Sunrace really is great quality, I put on on my XC bike fairly recently, same as Jon above, Hope Pro2 ally freehub.

Not used the sunrace, the Shimano has been absolutely fine since I went 1x10. If I had red bits on my bike I would probably get the mx3.
I've got a Sunrace and a goatlink on a medium XT mech, no problems at all. Unlike when I had a hope extender and a 11-36 shimano, Not used a 10 speed shimano wide range cassette though, because i didn't know they were a thing (i've been distracted lately). Happy with the Sunrace though.
I've got the Sunrace and its great, but if the Shimano is cheaper then it's a no brainier.
My SunRace 11-42 arrived from Germany yesterday after being sent all over the country by DPD it seems and is now fitted to the bike. Went out for a ride with it yesterday and all seems good. Shifting seems as smooth as on the Shimano 11-36 it replaced and I can't say on a short ride I really noticed the increase in steps between gears. I've got away with using the existing chain which had only done a couple of hundred miles but only I think because I'd already gone from 32 to 30 at the front.
When it all wears out I might be tempted by a full SunRace 12 speed set up especially if they end up with an 11-46 cassette option as well as the 11-50
