My lads right shifter is caput.

It’s a Shimano Deore Sl-M610 10 speed shifter.
Do I need to buy like for like or are there alternative models I can use?

I'm pretty sure all Shimano MTB 10 speed is cross compatible. Unless you can get linkglide in 10speed which I think isn't compatible.

You can use any 10 speed Shimano MTB  shifter. You can't use a sram one.

Someone round here must have one. I’ll have a ratch in the next couple of days

Yeah, any Shimano 10 speed shifter will work, just not linkglide as that had its own standard (I think due to the cassettes maybe having bugger teeth and less ramps (or something like that).

Yep, all Shimano 10sp should work except the newer linkglide type. Just check the mounting,  you get band on (seperate to the brake lever) or one of the various I-spec (that attach the shifter to the brake lever, I-spec b, I think)

@astura I’ve probably got one you can have for postage. Is it band on or I-spec?

Plenty available on sjs - might be cheaper elsewhere.

11 speed shifters, both Shimano and SRAM also work with Shimano mtb 10 speed mechs over 10 speed cassettes
