Can I use a 9 speed chainset in a 2x10 setup?
I realise I need a new cassette, chain and shifter but will the chainset work?
If not can I fit 10s rings to a 9s SLX HT2 chainset?

Yes, it'll be fine. You'll need a new rear mech though.

Running 1x10 on a Deore 9spd ring here. Works fine.
As above though, you need to buy shifter, mech cassette & chain.
9spd mechs won't work. They will, in a fashion, but I could only get about half the gears dialled in.
Run it 1x10 with a 36-11 cassette & you might not need a granny...???
