I am running 9 sp sram on my bike, i want a clutch type rear mech as th eidea of a silent bike really appeals.
so my question which google search has come up with thousands of answers but all fighting and contradicting -

I presume it is to do with the thickness of the chain and the jockey wheel compatibility that is the issue here?

No but you can use a 10 speed shimano clutch mech with the addition of a spacer.
There have been a few threads on here about it.
It's about cable pull not chain width
