Went out last night and broke my XTR derailleur. i am due to do Brecon beast on Sunday so in my haste to order a new one last night i've noticed i must have clicked on 10 speed not 9. Not going to have time to return and get another one by Friday so would anyone know if i can run a Shimano XT M786 2013 10 Speed Shadow with my 9 speed XTR drive chain? ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Sorry, pull ratios are different, so indexing will be borked...

As above, it won't work.

Isn't the indexing related to the shifter rather than the mech?

7/8/9spd shimano shifters use a different actuation ratio to 10spd mtb ones, so the mech wouldn't move the right distance to correspond with the centre line of the rear sprockets iirc.

Ah right. My son ripped his new sora 9sp mech off his cx bike last week and I was surprised to find a 25yr old rear mech worked fine as a temp measure. That was probably 7 or 8 speed so would work with 9. Cheers.

10 speed shimano mtb stuff doesn't have equal amounts of cable pull between each gear at the shifter end, and the mech design reflects that.
