Yes. Shadow XT 10 speed long cage with Sunrace 11-42 and 32t chainring - works fine although it's at its limit with the b-screw wound right in. Mech isn't too far forward in the big sprocket, and there are no problems with slap or dropping the chain.
The impression I get is that it's by no means guaranteed, and there may be something that gets in the way on your particular setup.

I did switch to a Pilo S10 mech hanger thingy (same job as woolftooth goatlink) to improve the setup.

I have a medium cage XT clutch mech on my 1x setup and it runs up to 42t dinner plate with no issues.
