I am working out a bike build for what is likely to be around an Intense Carbine. The Carbine doesn't have any ISCG tabs and has a BB92. I am thinking/hoping that a clutch rear mech will prevent the chain being dropped (a lot). Too big an assumption, any actual experiences?
My other issue is that I would like to run a 10 speed double (26/38) & bash. The only one I can find is a RF Sixc but at £500 it's a bit steep to say the least. Is the only other option to get, say, an XT triple and swap the chainrings? This solution is potentially quite expensive as well, assuming it is actually possible.
What are the alternatives? Is there a way of adding a bashguard to an XT 10 speed double crankset?
You don't actually *need* a bashring.
A front mech on its own will do as a top guide on a single or double, as it does on a triple.
I do also use bb mount Blackspire stingers on my bikes (single and double chainsets), which I really rate for keeping the chain on when its bouncing about.
I think youll need a 10spd chainset designed to run with 3 rings, so you've got space to fit a bash and you might need the right Bolt Circle Diameter to give you a decent choice of bashrings
If you're only after the crankarms/BB, you might find buying SLX triple over XT less money with little difference? at least in weight, not sure on stiffness?
I had not considered getting the crank arms on their own to save having to swap the rings out. I can't think that there's any compatability issues between any shimano crank arms and chainrings.
NB The bashring is 'needed' to protect from rocks and to stop the chainring slahsing my anckle open (as has happended in the past!). The BB92 will not allow a stinger as it is pressfit.
Same as you, I'm after a double and bash with BB.
Buying the crank arms, chainrings, bash and BB is more expensive than buying a triple chainset, middle chainring and bash.
Best I have found so far is a Race Face Turbine 10sp 2012 24.36.bash for £240
Why Shimano don't make the SLX double and bash in 10 speed is baffling :/
I was trying to build a bike on the cheap for the Alps this year and am running my old XT cranks (9 speed) with new 10 speed granny and middle XT chainrings (24/36) and a Hope bashguard, so it has cost me about £75 to do sort.
Yep, after experimenting with off-the-shelf double and bash setups with the 9-speed SLX and Saint, Shimano now seemed to have abandoned the genre. In ten speed they only seem to offer a double which won't fit a bash. Or you buy the triple, and swap out the middle, and buy an aftermarket bash. Weird!
I love the SLX 9-speed double & bash, and as the new 2013 SLX doesn't offer this configuration, its just another reason to stay 9 speed IMO.
I went for a 10 speed triple XT, ditched the outer ring for a bash and replaced the middle with a 36t.
Rose bikes are pretty cheap for rings.
or
and just remove the outer.

Well an XT chainset and some new rings is a shed load cheaper than a fancy pants £500 SIXC chainset...
There's always SLX or Deore 10spd triples available for significantly less money, all of which can all have their standard rings Changed for whatever you might want, XT isn't the only chainset Shimano make and TBH there's pretty much bugger all cost saving to be made from buying a bare set of arms Vs a full chainset and swapping the rings (plus you still have some spare rings for the shed just in case then)...
Go buy an SLX triple, whatever rings/bash you fancy, a BB92 adapter and crack on with assembling the damn thing...
I did this on my ragley. swapped the 32 middle for a 36. Just left teh standard granny ring. Fitted a Hope bash guard. All in all it would cost you £50 extra over a chainset.
Cycle Sports UK do a 26 inner and a 36 middle ring. Not quite a 38 but may be ok for you. I bought my bash guard from Dave Hinde (bought 2 from the shop and no problems with delivery on any of them.)
Can't you use 9-speed rings with a 10-speed chain & rear mech, or are they different?
Does anyone know if it's easy/cheap to go from a X0 double and bash to triple chainring? I'm thinking probably not but was hoping you can just replace the bashguard with a 42 chainring.
9 speed rings can be used on a 10 speed set up. Its the chain/cassette that needs to match

Cheers guys, that gives me loads more options.
How about an E type front mech, a cheaper Truvativ or Sram double chainset? X5 or X7 maybe. Truvativ have a good range. Have a look at the setups on the Canyon bikes website
Are double & bash chainsets just a weird UK thing like steel long forked hartails ?
Have my 9spd SLX D&B on a 10 speed setup, I fitted the 24T granny to it though off the 10spd crank. Also tried it with a race face evolve 9spd and a deore 9spd and it worked fine.

Don't know about steel HTs but bash rings are useful the world over.
