Does anyone have any experience of using a 1 x 9 set up with a 10 speed Shimano clutch derailleur/ Sram 9 speed shifter?
I have read numerous reports on the subject, some say it works faultless without mods. Others suggest it requires a few tweeks.
Ive seen pics of a Shadow plus XT, a hole drilled through the cable clamp arm, effectively shortening the throw from each shift....
Adversely ive seen pics of a Zee Shadow plus D/R with a fabricated 6mm ally block positioned on the original cable clamp, which im sure would lengthen the throw!?!?
Ive already spent money on a new 9 spd Sram 990 cassette and 9spd KMC chain, plus Ive just got some used Raceface 9spd atlas FR cranks, so im not no way switching to a full 10 spd set up! but id love a clutch d/r.
around £40 for the shdow+ Zee and £50 for XT. plus another £40 ish for a Raceface narrow wide chainring and im off.
So to some up, is it really possible to run a Shadow+ 10 speed D/R with a Sram X7 9spd shifter...
and if so, would a short cage Zee(wide ratio), or medium cage XT be a better option?
P.S. 26" Hardtail not full sus. 11-34 rear, 34? front.
Been thinking of doing this mod myself - have heard a number of positive reports. See the below link for some info on how to do it...

9spd Saint rear mechs have a powerful return spring, I've been running one on a hardtail with a raceface WN chainring and not lost the chain.
cant risk spending big money on a 9spd saint mech, only to find it dosent work for me. just need to decide which shadow+ mech to get
I'd say pop for a Zee - the mid cage version has a range of 25t, which should do the trick. Look at washers and presta valve stem nuts to get that magic 6mm fully dialled. When I got mine, it was about £45. You'll be surprised at how well tucked out of the way it is compared to older mech designs - I certainly am / was.
I am leaning towards the Zee, £41 right now. But the medium cage Xt is only another £9 at £50. the one thing drawing towards the XT is that it has sealed pulley bearings. End of the day though its the one that will shift through all 9 gears the smoothest that I really need.
Yes it works no problem - I'd add a spacer fosho as I just don't trust those that say it works fine without but with it is faultless. Oh and def go Zee - there's no point going 1x if you're going to carry around a huge caged mech that ruins the look.
My setup
Shifter - X9 9sp
R/D - Zee 32-36t - Wide Ratio
Cassette - XTR 11-34T
Chain _ XTR 9sp
Spacer - Couple of washers out of the spares box pending actually making up something proper.
Shifts are a bit more clunky than normal due to the added friction in the R/D but other than that you'd never know any difference bar the lack of noise.

Yep, done it myself on 3 bikes, works a charm. (it very nearly works without- I can sort of see why some say it works, if you're used to bad shifting and ghosting around which I know some people are happy to accept... But if you like gears that work correctly, it doesn't work.)
thanks for the input, reckon im going for the Zee. Which size and make chainring are you running Speeder? im not sure between standard 32 for the ups or 34 and a bit more top end
Me and a mate are currently running Raceface 34t Narrow Wide chainrings. Me 1x9 with an XT Shadow Mech (Long Cage)(about 2 years old) and him 1 x 10 with an XTR Shadow Mech (Long Cage). Neither are clutch mechs and neither of us have dropped a chain yet. Both of us are riding hardtails if that makes any difference. Speaking to the chap at Merlin when I got my NW Chainring he did say that they saw quite a few returns on faulty clutch mechs. In his opinion they aren't really worth the extra weight or chance of something breaking. To run a 34 if you're likely to be doing a fair bit of climbing, being a strong rider will certainly help. But having read your OP again I realise that you're wanting to use a SRAM shifter whereas ours are Shimano so ignore my babbling!
Works fine for me too. I used a nut that's 6mm thick with a slightly longer clamp screw,
all additional babbling(info ;)) is appreciated. Basically I bought a new cassette and chain, as old are knackered. So now Im looking for front rings. The 1x9 appeals as its cheaper to only have to buy 1 ring. But then I started researching which size combos work best, and Ive come across all these extra options that have started throwing new ideas at me. Obviously 1x9 needs some way of stopping chain throw. Narrow wide plus clutch mech has sounded the best choice, except that no 9spd clutch mech is available.
I already have 9 speed Sram X7 shifters and mech. nothing wrong with them. Im only looking to buy a shadow+ mech as it will apparently work sweet with sram shifters.
Hmmm maybe I'll just get the narrow wide for now and see how that fairs up.
Benji, have I read correctly that the raceface is reversible? i.e. will last twice as long??
I've not actually read that anywhere and I'm not sure how it would work but the chainring bolt holes are only sunk on one side so I doubt it. Don't shell out on a clutch mech just because everyone else says you need one. See how you go first on a normal mech (save some pennies). Remove some chainlinks if you have to. You'll also lose about a pound in weight of the bike. (No Shifter, front mech, fewer rings, cables and outers)
The chainring's doing all the hard work tbh- standard (single) chainring and clutch doesn't work at all, thick/thin chainring and accidentally not turned on clutch still works well. Both is best mind.

Are you talking about a 10sp Shadow + mech by Shimano, or a type 2 SRAM clutch mech? A 10 sp Shimano mech will only work with a 9sp SRAM shifter with the 6mm spacer bodge. Hope that babble helps.
10spd clutch rear mech not required to get nine speed to work with wide/narrow. I have nine speed 11-34 with RaceFace wide/narrow working brilliantly.
The dinky Saint rear mech has a strong return spring and so far no dropped chains in many months of use (completely different to with an SLX rear mech and Renthal ring which was droptastic)
