does anyone know of any 1 degree headsets for old school 1 1/8 ec 34 cups. i know of works components at £75 Direct but hoping for a cheaper option. offset shock bushes are not a option due to tyre already close to seat tube on full compression

I had a good look for a cheaper one including Ebay, classified and pink bike but could not find an alternative to the works one.

I don't think there is, for straight steerer. Cane Creek were supposed to be doing one but it'd be more expensive and less good anyway.

Way I look at these is, if it's worth doing it's worth paying £75 for. I'd rather it were cheaper mind but in terms of value, I got years of use out of my old frame because of a 2 degree headset- I'd have replaced it otherwise. Not many parts that can match that in terms of vfm. Whether it'll be as transformative for your bike I couldn't guess- 1 degree isn't as much but if it's like mine it could be the difference between "slack enough" and "ooh-er, bit steep".

(I put 2 degrees in my Remedy and that just took it from slack to slacker. Still worth doing but not a gamechanger)

I think On one used to do one for straight steerers.

I've got a spare on-one one, but it's for a short headtube. Can't remember the exact size, but can check at home. It's unused. Email me if that's of use?

so it does seem that works is my only option. the frame is an early hemlock, has anyone fittes a 1 degree slackset to one, or any other bike, was it a noticeable difference

Yes and no. But that's a good thing. I put one in my old inbred. I feel it does ride much better coming down stuff but it will never be a down hill monster. To offset the wandering front end, I moved the seat forward by 5mm. It has made me ride faster. A little too fast for my skill level, as I came off and broke my collar bone 😳

I put a 2 degree in a Hemlock and it was a genuine gamechanger- but that was a later gen with the bigger headtube, not sure if 1 degree would have been so decisive. I did have room in it for a 2mm offset shock bushing too. Put it this way, I'd have sold it otherwise, instead I kept it another 4 years, raced 2 seasons of Scottish Enduro Series and 2 EWS rounds on it, how's that for a vote of confidence 😆

I like my 1 degree headset. No issues, it's been on two frames and raced in the Alps. It's no massive change, but it improves the bike with no noticeable downsides.

I put -2 in my Orange Gyro which made it v similar to a Segment. Its worked failtlessly for 2 yrs. My daughter runs a works in her DH bike, an Iron Horse Sunday team...again, its worked really well

Superstar do 2 deg ones. Got 2 and both fine. Could be a little bit more aesthetically pleasing but they are inherently bulky and awkward due to having to angle the bearings out of the frame.

Works do a much bigger range.

PS a 2 deg will end up being about 1.5 degree due to the lowering of the head tube.
