Kona announces first EP8 model along with a host of E7000 machines

Kona’s gravity orientated Remote 160 DL receives a 15nm torque boost thanks to EP8, and a new shorter travel brother too.

It’s hardly surprising that Kona has released an update to the Remote 160 DL for 2021 fitted with the Shimano EP8 motor system. The DL version of the 160mm alloy eMTB now benefits from the smaller, lighter, drive unit and all those cool customisation features we’re just getting to grips within the new Shimano E-Tube application.

On top of the new motor, the DL has seen a fresh lick of paint and a 1-degree slacker head angle for even more downhill fun. It also runs on a pair of 29in wheels whereas the standard 160 gets 27.5+ hoops. Another difference between the 2 160mm travel bikes is that only the more expensive DL runs an EP8.

Riders opting for the more affordable Remote 160 and chunkier wheels will have an older Shimano Steps E7000 unit to shuttle up hills on instead. Both bikes also come with a new RockShox Zeb fork which Ross is just raving about.

It’s a similar story with the all-new Kona Remote 130. Using a similar alloy frame layout as the Remote 160, but with 30mm less travel, the shorter travel bike also runs an older E7000 motor and a 504Wh battery.

Kona states the Remote 130 is based on the geometry of the popular Process 134 with a 65-degree head angle, 435mm chainstays and room for 29 x 2.5in tires.

Fans of the Honzo who want some eLove will want to give the Kona Remote a look. It’s a 140mm travel hardtail eMTB also fitted with a Shimano E7000 motor, and internal 504Wh battery. The Remote ships with a Suntour Zeron 35 fork, Shimano 10-speed Deore drivetrain and a pair of 4 piston MT410 disc brakes.

Kona eMTB’s are available through local bike shops who should have stock of the new 2021 range available to purchase right now.
