For sale is our beloved 2009 T5 LWB 1.9TDI. We’ve owned Leroy for the better part of 3 years and also know the previous owner well. We’ve spent a remarkable amount of time in this van and will be very sad to see him go, especially in non-running condition. Can fit 4 bikes in the ‘garage’ under the bed, with room to spare.
It’s a late 2009 model, one of the last before the T5.1 facelift. Its long wheel base so has a 2.8m load bay which has enabled us to build the bed/garage arrangement you can see in the pictures.
The sleeping platform is full length (180cm) and wider than a double bed with 55cm of vertical space to sleep in. Lots of people comment on the bed height but we’ve spent literally weeks at a time sleeping in this van and probably totalling months over the past few years. The sleeping height isn’t a problem. If you want a serious garage, sleeping space and a living room all full inside a normal size van – this is the solution!
The garage is sized to take full sized 29” wheel modern enduro bikes both sides of the garage. Our common traveling arrangement was both road bikes and mountain bikes as well as all the associated kit – almost entirely stored in the garage. It really is huge if you’re good at packing Tetris.
The floor is fully insulated, ply covered and topped with industrial vinyl flooring throughout. Pictures of this process can be provided.
The twin passenger seat is on a double swivel base and can be rotated to make the ‘sofa’. It’s cosy for two but comfortable enough to chill on or cook on a camping stove inside the van when the weather isn’t playing ball.
The van is fitted with a Chinese diesel heater which in such a small space is tremendously warm. We’ve regularly left it on in sub zero temperatures overnight with great success. It was professionally installed by a man called Rick.
The electrical system is basic and consists of a 100ah halfords leisure battery, split charge relay and 2x USB B/C chagrin sockets, one either side of the bed. The heater runs off the leisure battery too and will run for 24-48h straight without needing to drive the van to charge the leisure battery.
Now for the bad bit: the cambelt failed two months ago and we have decided to replace the van with a newer bigger one. The cost of repairing just to sell immediately doesn’t really appeal to us hence Leroy is for sale for repair in need of an engine rebuild/replacement!
The chassis is solid aside from a small rust patch near the drivers door. The van was originally white but painted very early in its life and the black paint is a really good job and still comes up very well! There is some bodywork damage to the near side rear quarter where it was caught on a wall.
Mechanically lots of things have been replaced in the not too distant past. Both front control arms were done last year. A full set of discs and pads were done two years ago. The full set of michelin tyres have some life left in them. The common heater fan and resistor have both been replaced in the past 12 months.
Overall this is a great project for someone with some time and space to swap the engine. If it was running this is probably an £8-10k van. We’re asking £4,500. Considering an engine can be had for £1000 there’s a lot of value to be had from this van!
