2024 Red Bull Rampage Women: Who To Watch And What To Expect

by 1

Whoop! The news that you’ve all been waiting for! (Well, I have, anyway – and I called it right for many of the riders I predicted would be on the list). The riders for the women’s competition at Red Bull Rampage have been revealed. Let’s have a look at who they are, and what we might expect from them.

Camila Nogueira (ARG)

We’ve seen Cami race the big Red Bull urban downhill, and hit Red Bull Hardline, as well as hitting some big raw freeride lines in Roca Park, Chile. She’s no stranger to big drops, big air – or big crashes. Riding for Propain – who have quite the freeride emphasis going on – she’ll likely have strong support on site. Got to be a favourite for hitting something big and scary with plenty of exposure.

One of the OG of women’s freeride, Casey has been eyeing up the Rampage terrain for years. She’s got tricks as well as big air, and perhaps all that experience might help her keep a cool head under pressure. Like some others here, she’s got Swatch Nines a month before Rampage – which might prove to be a nice confidence building warm up, or could pave the way for injuries and alternates.

Hannah Bergemann (USA)

Hannah is another very experienced rider on the freeride scene. I’d expect some big drops and big air from her, though perhaps less of the mid-air gymnastics than some. That said, she’s been working hard on flips, so will she have them down enough to add one in? Riding for Transition, we can at least be pretty confident there’ll be a great video, whatever happens.

Jess Blewitt (NZL)

Jess has been focussed on racing but obviously couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be at the first women’s Rampage! With a season of DH World Series behind her, maybe she’ll be ready to let her freeride freak fly, or perhaps she’ll wow us with a fast and technical descent.

Robin Goomes (NZL)

One of the most stylish and versatile riders on the circuit, Robin is definitely one to watch. I’d expect to see a trick heavy line from her, possibly with a flip or two thrown in. The challenge for Robin might be to get enough features built to allow her to fit all the tricks she has in. She’s another that’s at Swatch Nines the month before, and those groomed jumps will certainly be an invitation to go big.

Vaea Verbeeck (CAN)

Rocky Mountain rider Vaea has a superman in her box of tricks, so it would be great to see that pulled off if the terrain allows. We know she’s not afraid of big gaps either, having ticked off plenty of features at Red Bull Hardline. And she’s fast. Could be an impressive combination.

Vero Sandler (UK)

One of the great throwers of tricks and shapes, I’d love to see Vero put down a great raw line up top, leading into something that lets her trick her way to the bottom. She’s not long since back from injury – though she’s been backyard jamming aplenty. Again, she’s got Swatch Nines the month before, and the Rampage descents are way longer than her backyard. She’s got loads of potential, so I hope the body holds up.

Vinny Armstrong (NZL)

Another rider with versatility and tricks galore. She’s perhaps not spent so much time away from groomed surfaces as some of the other riders, so the fickle soils of Virgin could be a challenge. I think I’d be right in saying this will be a first Rampage appearance for Forbidden.

OMG. That’s all rather exciting. And with a couple of months to go, and big consequences for going big, there’s a decent chance we’ll see some of the alternates getting a look-in come event day.

2024 Red Bull Rampage Alternates

  1. Harriet Burbidge-Smith (AUS)
  2. Chelsea Kimball (USA)
  3. Georgia Astle (CAN)
  4. Micayla Gatto (CAN)

Harriet is already injured at the moment with a spinal injury, which could see Chelsea be the first alternate called upon. Even if Harriet is recovered enough, it’s surely going to take a heap of courage to get back to her usual trick throwing self? Chelsea is a Utah local who sent the canyon gap at formation. She’s been working hard to nail flips this year – will she get a chance to get one in, or focus on the high exposure canyon jumps? Georgia perhaps has fewer tricks than some of the others, but she is well used to technical terrain, so we could see a nice raw line from her if she gets the chance to ride. Lots will have to have gone wrong for Micayla to make it to ride, but as her internal spirit level seems to be on the blink, expect to see her riding down something pretty close to vertical, and loose AF, if she does get to hit the Virgin hillside.

Here’s the official PR:

Top 8 Female Mountain Bikers in the World Are Invited to Premier Big-Mountain Freeride Competition

Virgin, Utah (August 15, 2023) – Eight of the top female freeride athletes have been invited to the 2024 Red Bull Rampage, the world’s premier big-mountain freeride competition. The women’s competition will debut on Thursday, October 10th, and in less than two months’ time, these top athletes will descend on Southwestern Utah where they’ll compete for the first time in the event’s history to determine the best in the sport.

“I’m so honored and excited to get to be a part of the first ever women’s competition at Red Bull Rampage,” said Red Bull freeride athlete Hannah Bergemann. “Red Bull Rampage is the pinnacle event of freeride mountain biking, and I’m so excited for women to have a platform on this stage. I can’t wait to see everyone compete.  This will elevate the sport and continue to open doors for the next generation of female mountain bikers.”

The eight competitors in the inaugural women’s competition were selected by a committee of former Red Bull Rampage competitors, pro athletes, judges, and industry experts based on a combination of recent competition results, video submissions, and overall ability.

The inaugural Red Bull Rampage was held in 2001, and since then, 17 different events and 9 different winners have earmarked their place in the history books. Only time will tell which rider will add their name to the history books as the first-ever women’s winner.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

Should be a great contest, love to see what they can pull off given the freedom to build their own lines. Is it a new site this year or the same as last year? Would be a good time if everyone had to start from scratch.
