Fresh Goods Friday 684 – The Clock Watching Edition

by and 7

Are we nearly there yet? A none more familiar family-er cry during long journeys. In this instance it’s not a car trip, it’s a journey through the working year that is nearly over. For some at least.

Apologies if you still have to work next week. Or if you’d like to be in any work any time but are currently unemployed. Take some solace in spending a few happy minutes taking in this week’s edition of Fresh Goods Friday.

Init though

Genesis Croix de Fer Ti

Coming into Singletrack World’s southern mountain test lair is this Ti Genesis Croix de Fer.

The Genesis Croix de Fer is Genesis’ flagship, and many would say, pioneering, gravel/do it all/multimedia bike. With mounts for every adventure, it still smartens up enough to work as an all-round road bike, a gravel race bike – and there’s even room for 650B wheels and tyres up to 45mm in the frame (and 50mm tyres in the front).

The 3AL-2.5v double-butted titanium frame and full carbon fork drops a kilo off the next best steel model. There’s still all of the bag bosses you could want, lovely brass cable adjusters and routing for wired and wireless, 1x and 2x gearing. This particular bike happens to be a test mule for Shimano’s newest GRX mechanical groupset and also features DT Swiss wheels. And while it’s a little on the spendy side, complete steel CdeF’s start at £1299…

Check back soon on grit.cx to see how Chipps gets on with it.

Rapha Women’s Trail GORE-TEX Pants

  • Price: £250.00
  • From: Rapha

Fully taped seams for waterproofness and mud resistance, a hanger loop in the waistband for easy drying after riding, designed to be worn with Rapha Knee Pads though the knee area is so generous it seems like even the bulkiest pads would fit under, Cam lock fastening waistband for a secure fit and two front hand pockets. So far, very good! Excellent beading and kept me (Amanda) dry after a two hour ride in heavy rain.

Specialized S-Works Prevail 3 Helmet

This is a warm weather helmet with great ventilation, but can of course be used year round if you run hot, ride hard or we’re a cap under it. The more vents, the easier it is to regulate heat. It’s got MIPS.

Hope Tech Early Xmas Prezzie

Yet more shameless bike media bribery from the corrupt illuminati of the bike industry world. This week it’s the turn of thee bestest bike bods in Barnoldswick – Hope Technology! Thanks for the tree dangler, stickers and mince pies. You really are the greatest brand in all of biking.

Specialized Dynaplug Racer Tubeless Repair Kit

I (Amanda) was given this tool on a recent press trip, and I can’t find it in the Specialized store but it’s too neat not to include in FGF. You’ll be surprised to learn that I got this through hand luggage security in Charles de Gaulle, Paris and Santiago airport.

Cube Vertex 3 Hip Pack

  • Price: £69.95
  • From: Cube

Possibly the most featured-filled fannypack we’ve ever seen. Hydration system compatible, front pockets including compartment division, hip belt pockets, wide hip belt for ideal support, elastic side pockets, ventilation through backsystem, light holder, two bottle holders at sides (that double as compression straps), waterproof cover… and just when you think you’ve found all the features:

External strap-on storage, as it were.

Magura MT Bleed Kit

It’s December, thus it’s time to give your parts a bit of love and a refresh. I’ve had a set of Magura MT7 brakes on a bike for well over a year now and I think it’s probably time to give them an inspection and a bleed. Not that they seem to need one. But it won’t do any harm. So long as I’m careful with those infamous composite bleed port Torx bolts on the levers. Note to self: 0.5Nm. No really. 0.5!

Josh Bryceland on Formula

  • Price: £secret
  • From: Italy

Just thought we’d sneak this bit of Fresh News into Fresh Goods.n Ratboy running Formula forks, MOD rear shock and Cura 4 brakes. He must have seen the Formulaic build up of my Orange Switch 6 test bed bike.

Josh sayeth: “Ive always had the best products. Or at least I thought I did. Having tried the Formula products I’m now positive I’ve got the best suspension and brakes out there –  they’re even better than pistachio gelato and that’s saying something.”

Thread Of The Week

Congratualtions to bowglie for this week’s winning thread. As the Big Day approaches, surely this is on everyone’s mind. Fingers crossed for Monday evening! (though, we can’t help but think a change of diet is in order for some of you…)

The winning TOTW in FGF gets a prize. So @bowglie please email editorial@singletrackworld.com for your random prize (it will probably be a Singletrack Forum Bottle Opener). Don’t forget to include your postal address, as it really speeds up delivery logistics like. K thx bye!

Tenuous Xmas music
What is Fresh Goods Friday?

It’s Singletrack’s long running, weekly roundup of all of the new products that have been sent in to the magazine.

Where do all of the goods come from?

They’re sent in by bike companies and marketing agencies

What happens to all of the products?

They’re featured and then some are reviewed down the line in either Singletrack Magazine or in online reviews and photoshoots.

What happens to them when you’ve finished with them?

They’re usually sent back after review, or kept on long-term test bikes. But no one ever asks for shorts and shoes back. Trust us on that. Once we were asked to return some brake pads.

I’m a company making the next big thing. How much does it cost to feature in FGF?

Nothing. Nil. Zero. Diddlysquat. Sod all. Just send all ‘next big things’ to us at – Fresh Goods Friday, Singletrack Magazine, Lockside Mill, Dale Street, Todmorden. OL14 5PX. Please note that if you require the products back after they have featured then you are responsible for arranging collection at your cost. While it is our policy to feature everything we receive in FGF if we decide your product is not suitable for publication we won’t do it. Publication is at our discretion. Whether a product goes on for publication as a review is at editorial discretion. Beer, coffee & spirits will ALWAYS be tested.

Orange Switch 6er. Stif Squatcher. Schwalbe Magic Mary Purple Addix front. Maxxis DHR II 3C MaxxTerra rear. Coil fan. Ebikes are not evil. I have been a writer for nigh on 20 years, a photographer for 25 years and a mountain biker for 30 years. I have written countless magazine and website features and route guides for the UK mountain bike press, most notably for the esteemed and highly regarded Singletrackworld. Although I am a Lancastrian, I freely admit that West Yorkshire is my favourite place to ride. Rarely a week goes by without me riding and exploring the South Pennines.

Those damn Rapha trousers came a week after I rode in a new pair of Pataguci, which are fine but a bit of a compromise in the length, and knowing that Rapha stuff tends to fit me – I was rather miffed. Now seeing how well they fit Amanda I’m even more miffed. Such is life. #firstworldproblems

@ £250 I would expect those strides from Rapha to keep me dry and offer personal services too.

@ahsat First ride impressions: Patagonia have better coverage on the lower back! Can’t deny the fit and length of these Rapha’s isn’t great though…
