Renpho R3 Mini Massage Gun Review

by 5

Renpho makes a number of ‘healthy living’ products, including a few different massage items designed to massage various parts of the body (no giggling at the back). There are implements for massaging your back, your feet, your legs, and even your eyes (I didn’t even know that was a thing, I can’t decide if it would feel amazing or terrifying). This R3 Mini Massage Gun is one of four ‘gun’ style massagers that they make and that are designed for general all over the body (but no, not there) use.

Yes, I’m (hopefully) being funny, but the R3 does come with some various stern warnings that it is not for use internally or for any sexual purposes. It’s also not for use on your head. Apart from those exclusions, there are five different massage heads that can be fitted to the gun to provide a variety of massage experiences. The gun is charged via a USB C charger, and can be set to five different speeds. Speed and battery charge are indicated by lights on the back of the gun.

Renpho R3 Mini Massage Gun In Use

The R3 is simple to use and with it I’ve found I can reach most parts of my body without an assistant. Reaching my back effectively – especially between and around the shoulders – is rather tricky and it seems to work best when someone else does those areas for me. This is a little annoying since I live alone a fair amount of the time, and it’s usually my back that gives me most grief. There is a separate back massager designed specifically for this purpose, which might be worth considering if you’re in my position. However, when I’ve enlisted one of my kids (you’re told to only let children over 8 operate it) to apply the gun to my back, it’s been better that the alternatives of no relief, or them attempting to rub knots for me themselves.

The different heads give different intensities of massage. I’ve tended to use the bullet one (centre, below) – meant for pressure points – or the flat head (above). I found the two-pronged fork the least useful – it’s meant for the spine, neck and achilles heel, but I preferred to use the bullet on either side rather than trying to get the two prongs correctly aligned at once. I didn’t find that it was comfortable to use the gun on the neck – it made my brain and head feel like it was being too rattled.

As well as adjusting the heads, you can adjust the speed. I found that the lower speeds could be fairly relaxing, but to really feel like there was any true massage effect – with pinking of the skin or warmth to indicate increased blood flow – I needed to use it at the higher speeds and press quite firmly. It did seem to me to feel more like I was being vibrated or jiggled than truly massaged, and if you get the wrong spot of your body – like catching a bone or tendon instead of just muscle – that sensation is exacerbated. It’s still reasonably effective at soothing muscles, and certainly better than nothing, but it’s no replacement for a proper massage from someone who knows what they’re doing – or even just someone who cares enough about you to put the effort in to trying to soothe an ache.

The gun is advertised as being ‘A super quiet brushless motor, as low as 45dB, makes it ideal for home, office or gym use!’. I’d have to disagree here – you can’t really watch TV while using it, especially on the upper body, and I have often wondered whether my neighbours might be discussing what I might be up to. I certainly wouldn’t be using it at my desk, and it would be pretty annoying if a colleague did so. The vibrations are just too noticeable.

Battery life indicator

Battery life seems pretty good – I think you could get a weekend out of it if you took it camping, or to a race. However, there are two things that I think will in any event see you using it in relatively short bursts. Firstly, there’s a cut off – it will automatically turn itself off after 10 minutes of continuous use. Apparently that’s a safety feature, and you’re also told not to use it for more than 30 minutes at a time. Secondly, I honestly couldn’t imagine being able to use it for that long – after 10 minutes my hand and arm are left uncomfortably tingling, a bit like you can get from operating some machinery. Apparently ‘white finger’ injury can occur at frequencies between 5 and 2000 Hz but the greatest risk for fingers is between 50 and 300 Hz. Renpho gives its vibration details in RPM, 1800 to 3200rpm, which is 30 to 53 Hz – so only just sneaking into the high risk zone. But it’s certainly enough to make me feel a bit uncomfortable after using it, and I wouldn’t consider using it on regular periods during the day if I was, for example, a sports therapist.

Overall

The Renpho R3 Mini strikes me as a useful alternative to having anyone actually on hand to soothe your aches and pains. If your key problem areas are your back, I’d consider looking at a back-specific model, as it’s a bit tricky to reach around with this gun yourself. But if you’re looking to soothe aching glutes, legs and hips, or maybe top up soothing between professional massages, then I think this is worth a look.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

@harry_the_spider it’s for your spine – going either side of the vertebrae.

    You lot are too predictable!
