Turkey Burner Race…

Here’s something that may be very welcome to anyone who plans on gorging themselves this festive season or trying to undo the damage a proper New Years’ Eve can cause. If you’re down near Exeter then this might be of interest to you:

“On Sunday 2nd January 2011, Woodbury Common near Exeter is hosting the inaugural Turkey Burner, part of the innovative Mud and Sweat mountain bike adventure series.

There are two types of event being run on the day – their usual Orienteering class which combines off-road mountain biking with the skill of navigating and is open to everyone from beginners and families to experienced adventure racers.

Riders will aim to get the highest score possible by visiting as many of the checkpoints marked on their map as they can in the time allowed. This allows everyone to choose their own route and set a personal challenge rather than chasing other competitors around a set course.

They are also running a ‘Trail Blazer’ class, where competitors will ride a number of laps around a set course (no navigation required), in the fastest time possible. This will be run a bit like a car rally, in that each person will be timed, and can carry out their timed laps at any point.

Individuals, pairs and families can enter on the day from 10am, all that’s needed is a sense of fun and adventure, a working bike, a helmet, a compass (if entering the Orienteering class) and money for entry fees and some well earned refreshments. Prizes from the event’s main sponsors Bigpeaks Adventure Superstore, Cotswold Outdoors and Powerade will be awarded to category winners after the event.
