Can any body tell me the best place to look for insurance for a new driver. My son is 20 and passed his test last week and the prices are very expensive Ie 1ltr ford KA 2009 he is getting prices around the 2k mark. We have tried loads of cars from new cars to cheap bangers and getting silly prices. Some are dbl the value of the car..

    Thanks

My son got the best deal from Insurethebox. It was still extortionate, but less than the other quotes we got, it also came down significantly after the first claim-free year. I’m sure the knowledge that he was being ‘watched’ had some (positive) effect on his driving. And the prices are high for a reason – about half of his peer group have had significant accidents in their first year.

When your doing you quotes see if the PassPlus scheme brings the quote down to a more reasonable value. If the reduction is more than the lesson it’s worth it.

That’s because he might crash into Mr Big’s brand new S Class…

But try the blackbox type insurance. Look into any specialist insurance too, my sister’s insurance on her Mini is loads cheaper because she pays something like £20/year to be in the Mini club. Saved her ~£600 in one year alone!

Can you add either you or Mrs Bellys as a named driver (NOT the main driver!)?

£2k is about right for starting off, sadly. Got a few years to save up till my lad starts driving.

Look at Pass plus, black boxes etc to try and bring it down. Also consider left field vehicles, something that might get on a classic policy, or a big old tank rather than the nippy smaller engined cars that youngsters usually have. And crash.

Once he has a couple of years no claims it will start to be less eye watering. One of the leading causes of death in young women is their boyfriends driving, apparently.

Whatever you do, don’t try and hide him/his car on a policy with in your name or you as the main driver. The insurers will only discover the fraud in the event of a claim. If it’s big enough and bad enough, as well as criminal charges, they will pursue you and him for their outlay and £2k will seem cheap.

(I used to be a claims manager. I used to hate finding out it was really the kids car only after the injury claims arrived 👿 )

Thanks for the info. We are not going to put my self or wife as main driver as it’s not worth it in the long run.

Adding one of you as an additional driver may reduce the premium though. Spouses are handy for that as well, but more expensive to run than a car.

Put yourself down as a named driver (not main), that will reduce the price. £2k isn’t really that bad, I was paying £1700 when I first passed 7 years ago.

It’s the lack of no claims that’s the issue rather than the age.

I’m 32 with 0 no claims as I’d had a company car for years, no accidents fault or otherwise.

    2000 2.0 Petrol estate car, ~£1400 a year 🙁

We had a very good experience with Quinn, I think they where something like 40% cheaper than the other quotes. You might try organisations like the Farmers Union (open to all).

I was a bit older than you (50) when I abandoned a life of company cars with the corresponding 0 years NCD
I rang around and LV accepted me and gave me 3 years NCD on the strength of a letter from our fleet manager declaring me claim free etc.
IIRC it ended up @ £350 for a 2.0L diesel.

3 years ago insurance wanted £3K from me for my car with British provisional license even when I have a Johnny foreigner driving license for more than 25 years. Managed to get one for £2K to 2.5K (can’t remember the exact amount now). 😯

3 years later I am still paying £670 p.a. for my car insurance for a 1.6 Auto gear Corolla … 😡

Try Ingenie, they’re a black box insurance company specifically for young drivers that were easily the cheapest for me. I’m 19 now and paid £1170 for my first year in a Peugeot 106 1.0 when I was 18. I’ve just renewed last month (with 1 years no claims) with Admiral (no black box) for £390 for the next year.

Get the first year out of the way and chose a car that’s got a small engine/not a typical boy racer (Corsa/Saxo etc.) and that’ll be the cheapest way of doing it. Add parents as named drivers to reduce premium cost as well. One thing you can’t help is postcode unfortunately, I think that it makes quite a big difference. I live in the middle of nowhere which helps.

As an aside, the black box encouraged me to drive safely and made me very aware of sticking to all speed limits. (no speeding fines and better fuel economy!)
