This summer we will be away for 3 weeks touring Europe in the camper van so the Passat will be at home guarding the fort !

Thinking I might disconnect the battery to stop battery drain and the alarm going off (not that it has) by accident.

Would you bother ?

If the battery is uncharged for more than about two weeks, reverse electronolysis will occur in the ECU, particularly on VAG models, which will cause the stator valve in the throttle valve to display a false negative, cutting the fuel flow during start and, by implication, causing the lambda sensor to signal inaccurately due to the coanda effect.
Personally, I’d keep it connected.

Only if you are confident the radio will work when you return. Dont alarms stop going off after a certain kength of time anyway?

It’s faulty then, get it fixed and leave your battery alone.

In a quarter of a century of driving, the only times I’ve had car alarms go off by accident is if it was an aftermarket Moss special fitted by a gibbon (ie, me) or if I’d left the windows open without disabling the ultrasonics inside.

And frankly, if I was leaving my car unguarded and unmoved for three weeks, I’d want the bloody alarm to work!

Lock the car but don’t set the alarm – then it can’t go off.

(i.e. press button on B post to disable internal sensors)

You may want to turn the alarm off – there’ll be a button for it. However, mine’s never gone flat in that time, not with a known good battery anyway.

I wouldn’t, but then my car alarm has never accidentally gone off.

Has yours? If not, then don’t bother.
If it has, then you could consider it. Or get a trickle charger and keep it plugged in while you’re away.

Me – I wouldn’t bother, but it’s you asking so how about removing the fuse or relay to the alarm?

If you are worried go to Maplin and get a solar powered trickle charger and leave it in the window facing South. Cost about a tenner. Worked for me when I laid up my Mondeo for a couple of months.

no water in mine…not now anyway ! and you can bugger off as well and btw you better get some rust treatment gonna need it soon with that Alfa !

& leave the handbrake off, but leave it in gear. You’ll see why if you dont.

Whys that then essle ? Its only 3 weeks, not 3 months.

I leave my french car sitting for 6 weeks quite regularly.

The pads dont stick to the disks,

The alarm doesnt go off

And it starts first turn…..

Did leave a hyundai for 6 months once. I cam eback threw a new battery on and put it straight for an mot. It passed .

I know a bloke (big John) that will sleep in your car for £75 while you are away.
It may smell a bit,but he will make sure it starts when you get back.
