I never trust those speed test sites. For example i just tested my connection and got this:

yet i am downloading from usenet at this:

Mine should be extended in the next 6-7 weeks by at least 3x the size.

dodgy wiring somewhere is scuppering mine. In the summer I'm at the 8mbit limit of my o2 connection

i live as far from the exchange as it is possible to get broadband, so i'm quite happy with circa 2Mb download.

after a good bit of fiddling and what not last night i finally have a stable connection

apparantly it's to do with the distance from your exchange and the wiring in your house – in south korea they are getting 1000mb BB and rising due to a fibre optic infrastructure, good old blighty and its 50 year old exchanges that need to be knocked down and replaced

i got sky to up my bandwidth to "20mb" from 2mb, they are doing this for free for new (+ moaning existing) customers for 6 months (they'll charge you if you go 1 second over so dont forget to set a reminder to renegotiate!)

but only if you ring them and whinge enough….

who would have thought, BT reselling a service, in direct competition to their own products, and its below par…shocking

    anyone for 9.6k retro dial-up?

those were the days, plus 10mb hard disc excitement

that offer ended on Friday and its a twelve month contract, so after 6 months you'll have to pay for the BB (£10 a month if you have Sky talk, £15 if you don't)……..I have inside knowledge of such things

TalkTalk (Tiscali as was) are currently offering me an upgrade from my existing 8Mbps package to an all-new service of … 8Mbps.

    I'm overwhelmed by their generosity.

Actually – it's maybe not that bad: £18.48 for 8Mb broadband + line rental + unlimited evening and weekend calls.

Any better offers to be had?

Have a look at pingtest.net as well. It measures the quality of your BB connection by various metrics: ping speed, packet loss and jitter (consistency).
