first: can i swap the cages over between two rear mechs? i want the short cage (old style) XT cage on an (old style) LX rapid rise mech.

    how?

second: how do i take the wobble out of an XT rear hub? what do i need to tighten and where? i'm willing to stick some araldite on there to stop it working loose again.

    cheers

p.s. can anyone recommend a decent, solid rear hub that won't work loose like the XT. "XXXCountry" riding.

    Hope hubs fo shiz.

Swapping mech cages… don't think so. Aren't they riveted in or something?

"a decent, solid rear hub that won't work loose like the XT"

Well, XT won't work loose given a little preventative maintenance…

Hubs- tighten your XT up properly (tighten the locknut against the cone properly so that neither can work loose). Other than XTR there aren't many better hubs.

    Cages- can't be swapped.

Sram ones can be swapped, which is why they fall apart.

    ok.

so how do i adjust the hub? i've had it done once at the bike shop but didn't pay attention…

You need a set of quality spanners to adjust the hub.
There's no point trying if you don't have them.

It's pretty simple if you are in anyway mechanically minded – just a cone+locknut on each side (+ a few spacers).
The trick is to get the cone at the right tightness against the bearings (ie no play but smooth) and VERY tight against the lock nut – this is where good spanners come into it (if the lock nuts aren't really tight, they will come loose again).
