Does switching the channel that a wireless router uses to one which no-one else with in range uses improve the performance of a wireless connection?

I downloaded a bit of software to scan wireless networks and there are about 8 other it picks up, 5 of which share the same channel as me.

Is it just a matter of changing the channel number in the wireless router settings – I assume all my connected devices still just use the SSID and the auth code to login and will need nothing changed if I switched channel (maybe a reboot?).

I don't broadcast the SSID as I read also that this improves performance as other devices aren't trying to connect all the time.

Yup you can just change it and don't need to change anything on the computers, and it can make quite a big difference ime
