So… I have decided on staying away from a carbon Hardtail for the moment.

I have come up with 3 frames to choose from.

so its a 29er Hardtail for Winter riding?

Trail centres? grand days out? Muddy Forests? Racey or relaxed Geo? Rigid? 100mm? 120mm? Everything?

I have some 100mm Fox 29er forks to go on it.

It will be used for muddy forest riding, singletrack, and general winter hack.

    salsa el mariachi?

or I’ve a medium swift languishing in the shed I could be persuaded to part with.

£250 + postage for the frame, fork and headset (or collect from Wokingham, or I might deliver if you live somewhere I fancy riding)

Winter bike = mud clearance and mud tyres.

A dedicated winter bike is likely pick up largte amounts of mud which needs clearance They also need to wear mud tyres which will mean 1.8s to 2.1 max. This removes a large amount of comfort so FWIW I’d consider something a bit more forgiving than alloy. I find the ride on a more forgiving steel soul pretty harsh with a 1.8 on the rear.

Excuse my ignorance but what’s the difference ride wise between steel and ally.

First thoughts would say that the ally frame would be more comfortable.
