I have a friend looking at moving over to this as their OS.
They have a genuine Windows Ultimate CD, but no key.
Do these things still have keys or is there some other activation doohickey now?
How do they get one or what do they do so the CD can be used, theoretically, like.

Feel free to mail me off group if you prefer.

what, you mean "borrowed" ? Without a valid key it will only work properly for a grace period – perhaps 90 days. The DVD should come with a key

The key words you need to be looking for are "windows 7" "activator 1.8"

It's quite a good system, and that's praise coming from a mac head.

Go to a shop and buy a legitimate version, and use the key which comes with that with their CD.

The grace period is 30 days but can be extended. You should have a key with it. It can be illegally faked very easily but that would be illegal, though there are literally hundreds of torrents with keygens and activation programs. I do actually like W7, seems like a good system. I might even consider buying a copy for home use if it were not so damned expensive.

yep they still use keys to activate, you'll have to make sure the key matches the type of windows 7 disc ( oem / retail and the keys will only work with specific manufacturers disk )

you can get home premium for 60 odd notes and its worth the money, if its for a home pc ultimate doesn't really give you anything that you'd need really

Is that the most basic version? As i am looking for the absolute basic version at the cheapest price, and don't want fake OS. I want to dual boot my macintosh for autocad.

Home Premium really is fine. Very little extra comes with Ultimate that might make it worth the extra money.

Ultimate just has all the home/media stuff that Home Premium has, plus all the business/security bits that Professional and Enterprise have. For all the normal home stuff, Home Premium has everything you need.

(I'm only on Ultimate because I was given it for sitting through an MS event)

As for the original question, no key, no activation = non-working after 30 days. Tell him to go back to wherever he got it from and get one.

Windows 7 ultimate £60 if you have a student in the house

To get it from there for MS products you don't even need a student email or ID.

W7 pro on there for £36.95!! I think he needs to dip in his pocket and shell out.

no for a copy that come with a new pooter, yes for one separately bought – I think – but you'll have to call MS to transfer, and you may have to characterise it as a rebuild

This is one reason I've held off suggesting it for a family member who wants it, I didn't want him spending the cash on something that would keel over if we changed a few bits – it is linked to the motherboard serial and a few other bits of hardware IIRC.

I changed my sound card and memory with no problems. IIRC it's off the Mobo and as Simon says a simple phonecall fixes that problem.

Well at least that eases my mind on that one. For £36 is a bargain 🙂

Sure is I'm tempted to get it for my laptop.

You can only transfer retail versions, not OEM, correct.

Looks like I need to wait another year and a half before upgrading – though amused to see the local playgroup is on their list, so maybe not!

You don't need a student email or ID for MS products from that site. Oh said that already.

I gathered that, but you do have to put down an educational institution – so lie?

Looking at the signup page it asks for a school, so just pick one near you. It also says on the Windows 7 page that the offer is for parents.

    Worth noting is this.

This version of Windows 7 ships as an upgrade edition. It is NOT possible or permitted to perform a clean install with this product. You must have an existing valid Windows operating system on your hard disk. All editions of Windows 7 will now include the Internet Explorer 8 web browser as standard.

So you'll have to have an OS already installed, I guess the key may well work with a backup copy though. 😉

So lie (though if they're willing to accept the local playgroup I won't be 😉 )

If it works the same as previous upgrade editions you'll need to have a valid install disc for a previous version. If by "backup copy" you mean a normal non-upgrade install disc you've borrowed then I doubt it will work as the keys are tied to specific versions (you need a "backup copy" of Vista or XP 😉 )

Not a lie if your saying your a parent with kids at the school, playgroup and you do.

I'm not sure as it's European that relies on the upgrade, so if it's a Pro key it may work on Pro upgrade or not, then again they are a bit fussy. No matter to me as I have a XP disc anyway.
