Life does mean life, insofar as they remain under sentence after release: on parole for life, and any further criminality can see them going back to gaol straight away.

The minimum tarif is just that – the earliest point at which parole can be considered. Whether that is sufficiently long or not in any given case is another question…

They dish out proper prison sentences in the United States.
