  • Which winter gloves?

I have never found any good for more than an hour or two in the winter if is wet and cold. Some "waterproof" gloves have proved so sweaty and impossible to dry as to be useless.

    What do you recommend?
These look quite good "SealSkinz Waterproof Winter Technical MTB Gloves £32" but I dont want to pay that much unless recommended.

    Thanks

    Bit cheaper here
Got a pair last year for sub-zero temps – any warmer & they get too sweaty. The inner lining is a bit loose, if you're hands will get damp from sweat I'd suggest trying something else. But at the price above, worth a punt.

edit; waterproofing is good though, often wear them walking in winter rain & haven't had a problem (unless you have to take them off & put back on with soaked hands!)

    I have a pair of these…

They're pretty good, and they're much easier to wear than the similar Endura offerings – liners doesn't pull out etc. Only problem is when it's really cold, and your finger tips are painfully cold you can't blow through the gloves to warm them up.

After wasting money on a pair of Gore 'waterproof' gloves I'm in the market for the same. Warm and soft is more important than waterproof, for me I've discovered.

'warm & soft' is definitely covered by the sealskinz mtb gloves mentioned above, woodsman.

Dont do Endura Strikes – leaking after a couple of months, wearing through fingers already, inner moves around and makes it difficult to get on, you cannot take them off when you have gloves on your hands.

Surprisingly cr*p product – and I am Mr Endura in the winter from head to toe….

I went for the Strikes mainly on price and actually find them pretty good. I only use them commuting 7 miles a day though. My inner moves a bit but not annoyinly so.

Specialized Deflect gloves seem nice, they're only water resistant though.

Gore Windstopper gloves have served me very well over the years. Windproof, water repellant(ish) and most importantly, still warm even if they get a little wet. Am going to look in to soft shell gloves for this winter, though.

I thought Sealskinz were awful. As mentioned, the liner feels very loose and with the pair I had, the thumb liner had been sewn too short so didn't fit well. I took them back to swap them and all the size mediums had the same thumb sewn too short (I don't have odd thumbs!). The LBS guy (guess which one in Sheffield…) was indifferent saying "Yeah thats how they're made and it happens sometimes". Sometimes… on every pair you have in the shop?

I have 661 Storms. They're good as long as it doesn't piss down for extended periods. I just don't like lined gloves for riding so try and get away with heavy duty summer gloves as much as possible.

I like my Sealskins Winter technical MTB gloves. Keep my hands dry and toasty. No problems with fit in my case. I'd buy them again if they wear out.

I bought some Deflect gloves 3 years ago. They've had very little use in that time and the suede palm & fingers has worn through in several places. They're just falling apart.

I liked them when they were intact but I'll be sending them back to Specialised. They can replace them or keep them. I'm not fussed which.

I found a pair of Spesh Deflect gloves at Swinley four years ago; they were clearly not new and yet were so much better than my brand new Northwaves that I've worn them since and they've only just worn out on the thumbs (hence being in the market for new winter gloves).
I'd probably buy something windproof/softshell and wear silk or merino liners underneath.

For proper cold winter weather I use Specialized Radiants.
For anything down to about zero I've got some Pearl Izumi although they're not the best gloves I've ever used. My hands really suffer in cold weather and it's rare that I can get a glove that works in the middle ground that we've got at this time of year. The Pearl Izumi ones definitely aren't waterproof either.
