Ive got a basic £20 shimano free wheel screwed onto my dmr revolver hub on my simple.
except i got it wet a few weeks ago, and now every time i go out i have to "crack" it to get it to turn. it loosens up within a few moments, and then just sounds rough as a dogs arse.
it always sounded cheap from the off.
considering its "drag it out the shed" bike, i would like a better freewheel i think.
any advice? i have very little knowledge of such things...
Service it or if you want a more fancy new one buy a White Industries one.

i didnt know they were serviceable. i guess you pop cir-clip pliers in the little holes and take the covers off. i might give that a bash, and improve the sealing on it...

Even if you can get it apart, it will be rusted and basically scrap.
Either go the whole distance and buy a new high-quality one or get a another cheapo.

5-speed 14-26
6-speed 14-28
7-speed 14-28
7-speed 14-21 with a well-used 17T
Each 'speed' has different sprocket spacings, so need to match up with your indexed shifter.

It'll come good again if you service it.. It's really easy, and you can leave it on the wheel. Only take the lockring off, slap some thick grease inside, and if it's got loads of play then take out one of the thin shims. If it's totally dry, then you'll have to use a biro or something to stick the bearings back in place with grease. Then spin it as you tighten it down to distribute the grease. You might need to do it a couple of times with a ride inbetween to clear out the crud.
EDIT.. it undoes clockwise!
WI freewheels are good, but they can still fill up with mud. Easy enough to service yourself though.
Dribble some oil into it.
Don't dribble, chuck it in a tub of oil, let it soak, let it drain. Even better is old fashioned motorcyle chain wax which you heat on the stove and your mum bollocks you for. I doin't hink there is anything between Shimano and White, which is a shame as the latter is just to pricey. Don't buy Dicta, they are made of recycled chewing gu wrappers.
its a pretty new single speed one (thanks though paul). i dont think it will be rusted, it just sunk into a bog on dartmoor, so needs a flush, as could be full of craaaaap.
