Following on from my earlier query on how to swap oner the HDD on my MacBook I’m now shopping for an HDD. I had read some things that 7200 rpm drives were less reliable than 5200 rpm drives. Is this the case in anyone’s experience?

Also what brands are the best brands?

I’n not going for solid state as it’s too pricey for a 1TB drive.

    Cheers.

Check blog.backblaze.com they run thousands of drives in their system and analyze failure rates.

Not the case in my experience, and the price you pay in performance can be steep to drop down to 5.4k rpm.

I’d investigate whether there are ‘fusion’ drives available, and how well OSX deals with non-proprietary ones. That way you get a bit of SSD for the regularly used stuff, and the OS shunts your less-used stuff onto the spinning disk.

Cheers. Not too fussed with getting the ultimate performance, but my 5200rpm current drive seems to struggle with HD video footage so hoping a 7200 rpm drive might do better. Just want the ensure I’m getting the reliability too, but the hybrid drives look interesting and seem to be compatable. Cheers.
