Any cable levers will work but Avid SD7's allow you to adjust the 'feel'

you need v-brake levers, not just any old cable lever - the older ones for cantilever brakes pull a different amount of cable and will feel VERY squidgy by comparison.

I set them up just with the Deore all-in-one shifter/brake units on my gf's bike and they work pretty damn well.
