following on from http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/i-got-attacked-with-a-car-yesterday-evening#post-3816852 i now need a new wheel(s).

i want something that will stand up to abuse (not including being ran at with a car), trips to bike parks, etc. and preferably lighter than what i currently have (shouldn’t be too hard as they are fairly heavy).

i don’t know much about wheels so it’s over to you. your opinions are welcome!

I found the DS28’s difficult to run tubeless with Stans strips as the inner bead is a bit of an odd shape. If that sort of thing matters to you…

if you can get superstar dh rims id say get them. wider than mavic, and the southern downhill (ride.io) dh team raced them all last year. cheap too.

+tubeless compatibility looks suspiciously like they’ve paid for the patent from Stans
+a lot lighter than they look (about 15g heavier than than white stans flows)
+no one else has them
+gold anodising
+they look bad-ass

not the sturdiest of rims, ime. i managed to put one or two dents in the rim after three tours. it’s now my “spare” rear wheel and may have to use it next week if i don’t find a replacement set for the fubared one.

Mavic Deemax, new for 310€? lightest DH wheelset available, so it should be fine for touring, too. watchyafink?

Have a set of Syncros DS 28 rims on Hope Pro II hubs not sure on the spokes as they came pre-built from Santa cruz. I have been ridding them for nearly two years and they have been faultless the odd little scratch on the rims but still true. Also had very little trouble ghetto’in them managed it with a track pump and some cursing.
Used in the lakes mainly and replaced some “cheese” shimano XT’s which were crap.

I had a pair of Spank Subrosa rims. I was not impressed, yes they are pretty light for the width of rim but the rear did not last long at all, buckled very easily, only riveted and no eylets. I still have the front rim set up as ghetto tubless, which by the way is a real b***h to do due to the “oompah” bulge. The powdercoat finish is poor and peeling off in large patches after not very long. I am going to swap it back to the mavic 321s.

Liking my Superstar dh rear. Not managed to break it yet..

I also have 721’s on Hope’s and they have done me 7 years of general abuse. If you are getting them built make sure the builder does not cheap out on the spokes or nipples. Plenty of the online builders say what they use though.

I am sure the superstar rims are good as well.

To be honest I think you’ve made a pretty poor/strange selection there. What’s your total budget and what do you weigh? And what’s the biggest stuff you’ll be doing?

i find the sound of of the ProII annoying/distracting.

ended up plumping for a new set of Deemax at 300€. they’ll arrive tomorrow, i’ll put them on the bike and see what i think. spoke to a good mechanic friend of mine who has a good reputation as far as wheelbuilding goes, thinking that he could knock something up for me. he said, however that at that price there was nothing he could do that compared.
