when i was 8 pops was changing the company car from the 1.6 gl cortina in blue to a 1.8GL sierra in white! i used to think you could get 15 people in it!! i was very sad!! (stil am come to think of it!!)
honestly dont remember wanting anything else, how sad am i! lol know i got super excited about getting the next new company car in 1990 and that was a sierra 1.8 GLX in blue! and would argue till blue in the face that it was Far superior to Any Vauxhall as it was a Ford and they were simply better! haha!

When you were 8 years old what car did you want your dad to buy?

My dad got one of these just after I passed my driving test and his company insurred me on it.

It was brilliant. It is probably the reason why I bought The Mighty Vectra 20 odd years later.

I was quite happy. My dad had one of these.

I thought the fins over the brake lights were the coolest thing ever. but then I do work in IT now so I'm probably not the best barometer for what's hip and down with the kids.
When I was older mind, my dad got the most awesome car on earth.

Now that's a car to learn to drive in. No wonder I'm such a brilliant driver now.

I always wanted my dad to get something like this

Me and my brother used to spend hours designing them as kids and wanted one so much. I was always going to make my own when I grew up.

have you made one yet?

Cavalier Calibre. A real dreamboat at the time. We ended up with an Ital.

Have I hell.
I was also going to buy a truck and travel across Africa.
Not done that either.

Not done that either.I think it's probably a good thing anyway. The reality is usually nowhere near as good as the anticipation. I remember as a kid I thought driving a Ferrari would be the most awesome experience ever.
But it wasn't. It was like driving a badly made Fiat.

We had one of these;

to be honest I don't remember being traumatised by goign round in it but I remember hoping we'd have a proper car like all my freinds families did.
My parents did have 4 kids and a large dog, though, and subsequent experiments with a Cortina Estate proved that a minibus was probably a good choice in the days before people carriers.

How times have changed. I remember lusting after a Fiat Tipo turbo.

Had a poster of this on my wall and really couldn't understand why we didn't have one in the garage

Did have one of these though (2 actually, but I was only 5 when they had the first one)

I had a 5GT Turbo as my first car (student loan paid the insurance!) and loved it. A mate still has a 16k miler sat on his drive under a cover. Probably appreciating in value if it's not rusted away!

my dad had one of these when I was about 11
then two of these (one after the other, not at the same time)

then one of these (which he still has)

He likes his jap cars pointy, does my dad.

I must be the same age as Harry as I wanted a Matra Rancho and a Fuego as well.
Instead we had a succession of Cortinas and Sierras.
Eventually I persuaded them to go for something a little more exciting.

Not great to look at but the suspension was cool.

Derek_Starship ... that's a Uno Turbo

mathewjb - that's odd - our family history of cars and car wants reads almost identically to yours. Although my dad did get a Capri once. And a Maxi for some mad reason (although it WAS the 1750 twin SU carbed version so it was pokey (for its day).

When I was eight, any car would have been a luxury. There were only around five cars in the whole street, and two of those belonged to a family who ran a taxi/wedding car business. When we finally got a car it was one of these:

Sadly, before we had a chance to really use it my dad died. I was eleven.Posted 1 year ago # -
Family transport was one of these:

Nice example and pics here: autosleeper
Don't remember wanting my dad to get a specific car, just any car would of done.
Imagine my confusion when the Auto Sleeper died and he came home with one of these to transfer all the camping stuff over to instead. Never a problem finding it the ASDA carpark.

Remember wondering why we couldn't get a normal car like my mates dad just got.

Thankfully my mates smugness wore off after they found out it was actually pretty awful, they got rid of it within a year.
