    They appear to be the same weight (ish) and both have an alloy spider.

    Is the alloy lockring on the 990 the only difference?!

    (or should I just buy an XT instead?)

    I had a 990 that lasted forever and a replaced it with a 980 as I couldnt see any difference other then the price.

    2 months after fitting I develop trouble shifting gear and with chain slipping half way through a ride. Upon investigation back home it comes down to 4 bent teeth on the 18t ring of the cassette 😮

    I’ve always used Sram cassettes in the past so may buy another 990 to replace it or try an XT.

    980 has a carrier over 3 biggest sprockets (like SLX), 990 has a spider over more (like XT has over 5 biggest)
    990 is a bit lighter than 980

    Doesn’t the 990 come in a range of lovely colours? I have a red one
