A huge number of differences. firstly the age - they guy that hit the op and was hit by him was not 10. Secondly the OP acted in self defence with a reasonable use of force - allowed within the law whereas hitting someone after the fact is not.

You are allowed to use reasonable force to defend yourself - from old ladies to dogs to kids to adults. Its all about what is reasonable as defined in law - which has several definitions but " as decided by a jury of your peers" or as " understood by the man on the clapham omnibus" are the two common ones.

the asphalt towpath was blocked, there's a grassy (and on the night, quite wet & potentially slippy) strip on one side, given how quickly I was surrounded I daresay there were more of them standing on this side as well, but my light beam is quite narrow and it's pretty much pitch black down there. Anyhoo, I think I was in the right, so that's all that matters to me

I can recount an incident last year in clear daylight on the canal path in Livingston where a complete bunch of moronic neds assualted my partner who was following me. On stopping getting off my bike and walking back towards them the fled like sheep and I can handle myself, (15 yrs of martial arts).
N.B. - If you are forced to strike out, clench your fist as tight as possible, step forward and punch striaght to the solar plexus, not the head, you wind them, they drop then leg it.

No, noy at all, however in this case when you are provoked, or assualted, you are allowed to defend youself, if that means striking back then so be it.
But the self control option here was to ride round them. Maybe even exchange pleasantries.
