I fail to see how other people's inability to recognise their own goods should impact you. Reluctant or no, they should still be investigating.
Nontheless, you could perhaps try telling the 'alleged' that there's a chance it could be a rare collector's item and valuable, but you'd need the s/n to check whether it's a first edition or not. Or something.

Get him to take a photo and send it you by e-mail (in a format preserving the exif data)?
Just say your looking for dead pixles on the sensor or something and get him to photgraph some white paper.
binners - though the extra stiffness that 1.5" steer tube will provide would undoubtedly improve owning performance over, say, a 1-1/8" Z1, I think we can all agree that the obvious weight advantage inherent in their design means that moto shivers are currently the most suitable bomber for the job.
