how can they get away with advertising mpg rates that are so wrong compared to actual driving? i know we alll drive differently but does anyone get near what they state?
They aren’t advertising that their cars will get that fuel economy. That’s not what it is. It’s what the car achieves on a standard test, as above.
It used to be that the combined figure was similar to what you’d get in normal driving, but not really any more because manufacturers have learned how to cheat whilst doing the tests; and even worse they allegedly tune the cars to do well at the test AT THE EXPENSE of real-world economy, which is frankly disgraceful.
Apparently though Volvo don’t do this, which is why their cars seem to perform less well on the tests but are actually pretty good in real life anecdotally.
I can achieve the combined figure in my Prius with extreme care in mixed driving; and no bother at all on the motorway (61mpg), but only in the summer. I can easily beat it in the Passat because I do more motorway than town. However they are both older cars with much more sensible test results, before cheating became so common.
