more specificly the forks, they are much more expensive than other forks and I was wondering what it is about them that makes them so special.
Are they any better than rockshox or fox etc.?

It's because you associate everything coming from the Swiss as being very good and it works - unlike DT Swiss forks which don't as they are just rebadged Pace crap instead - stands back and waits for a slagging off pmsl.
I believe the DT Swiss forks are different from the Pace offerings but I still wouldn't buy them as reviews haven't been that kind and the price they ask is just ridiculously high.
Euro to Pound Exchange rate hasn't helped recently...
But yeah, the "Swiss" bit is perceived as bringing quality. Which IMO you get with their hubs, but having owned a pair of Pace forks back in 1996, and DT's forks basically being rebadged Paces, I'd definitely not buy them... I know, I know, it's a stupid prejudice, and it's a long time ago, but hey ho!
if you have ever worked in Swiss-cheese-land then you will know that they get paid very high salaries. whether they deserve them is another question
New forks now its totally been taken over and Pace are outa there!
However if cost is in discussion, how the hell can they charge circa £500 for a MTB Rim??????

Every hour, on the hour, a little cuckoo attached to the fork spring pops out of the top cap and shouts out 'Oi, knobster, you should have bought a Reba'.
You can't pay enough for little design touches like that.........
carbon forks made in europe are never going to be cheap, and the minor detail that the pound has collapsed v the swiss franc over the last year only adds to the pain.
They're made in Switzerland - and, as far as I'm aware (and happy to be proven wrong) everything else these days is made in the Far East. Only Magura and DT forks are made in Europe/Switzerland. That tends to push the price up. And having seen the new DT forks at Icebike last week, they look good and the prices appear competitive, certainly with Fox and Magura.
I seem to remember that when they changed from Pace to DT Swiss, the price went up instantly, and by a lot. It appeared at the time that a badge change had near doubled the prices. Were they made in the UK when they were still Pace? I mean right up to the time they were sold to DT?
Aren't the better Marzocchi's still made in Italy? I'm not sure, but I thought the cheap ones were Chinese & the better ones were still Italian. Others will know better than me as I've not owned any Marzocchis & not payed too much attention lately.
I agree that Rockshox seem to perform so well that spending more money seems silly. Next lot I need are likely to be RS.

Not just the forks. How can they charge a quid of a bit of wire with a hook at one end and a thread at the other?
I think people are over simplifying things. When pace was making the forks they had quite a lot of problems with quality control. DT took over, moved production to Switzerland, put their own quality control in place and I don't see people with problems anymore.
I would assume the workforce is more expensive now, added quality control costs more (as can added tolerances with parts) and then of course the brand costs more in itself (pace did not use carbon did they). I just bought a DT RWS rear axle for 50€ and felt that was more of a rip off when you look at what you are getting for your money.
Besides all forks prices have gone up significantly in the last 3 years. Would you have seen yourself paying 1000€ for a single crown fork in 2006/2007?
Fox vanilla 500€ New DT magnesium 585€ I don't really seem to see that has a rip off? Plus they do perform very well. Last time I checked, bushing life on 160 mm single crown RS 6 month.
I was playing about on a Pronghorn last week with a set of DT Swiss forks on it - seriously nice forks, felt very plush going over the rocky/dumpy bits but felt nicely stiff when steering.
They felt seriously nice...if I had the cash, I'd have them over a set of Fox instantly. I don't have the cash for any forks just now but if money was no object I'd be going DT Swiss/Pace; Rock Shox then Fox.
As it stands I'm riding Fox as they came with the bike...but I'd much rather have the DT Swiss.
Yeah, I had an EXC150 on a bike that got stolen. Got the 2010 Fox Float on my next bike and really felt it was not close to as nice.

All 3 pairs of Pace forks I've had (2 suspension and 1 rigid) have had carbon legs, so yes they did use carbon.
