I think people are over simplifying things. When pace was making the forks they had quite a lot of problems with quality control. DT took over, moved production to Switzerland, put their own quality control in place and I don't see people with problems anymore.
I would assume the workforce is more expensive now, added quality control costs more (as can added tolerances with parts) and then of course the brand costs more in itself (pace did not use carbon did they). I just bought a DT RWS rear axle for 50€ and felt that was more of a rip off when you look at what you are getting for your money.
Besides all forks prices have gone up significantly in the last 3 years. Would you have seen yourself paying 1000€ for a single crown fork in 2006/2007?
