That democracy still has a fair bit of evolution to go through before it’s perfect.

That the only politician in the entire country that seems to have a clue what they’re supposed to be doing is a wee lassie fae Ayrshire.

if you don’t invest in deprived areas then it opens the door for ignorance, xenephobia and political opportunism.

There have been lessons beforehand, mind.Just have might have, sort of, forgotten this

Referendums are not a good idea.
Also don’t ask questions you don’t like the answer to.

That even the most important vote you may ever be asked to cast can be influenced by they who shout their lies the loudest.

Democracy is a very fragile thing, even in countries that have a long established tradition there will be loud shouts to ignore it when it doesn’t produce the “correct” result.

If you have a functioning parliamentary democracy no matter how imperfect you should use it and not resort to plebiscite where by definition 50% of the decision makers are of below average intelligence. If you do insist on a referendum that will massively effect the entire population then the threshold for change should be at least 50 % of the electorate not just those who vote.

If governments don’t engage with their people and simply dismiss half of them as thick and un-intelligent then eventually it will come back and bite you. This is not a British disease. It’s rife through the US and Europe. Apparently if France were to have an EU referendum today then 68% of the population would likely vote out. Same root causes, its just us that have blinked first.

Wobbliscott: sure you haven’t got your facts wrong/ or incorrectly translated an article from French? Last thing I read on the french feeling towards the EU was about 100% in the other direction.

To be fair, they did say the consequences would be very severe, so this is going exactly to plan: Tell the markets to ‘do your worst, we don’t care’ and then stand back looking smug.

Mugsys, not sure if it is a fact or scaremongering but it came from a French journalist/commentator on CNN was saying as justification of Hollande being in such a hurry to get this over and done with (and make an example of us) before the French elections for fear of Le Pen gaining and forcing a French referendum. Having said that who really know’s. The only thing we do know is that you can’t trust the Poll’s.
