Nice bloke who lives near us, but not a clue what his job is in real terms or what he’s on about here:

    Any ideas?

From the first bit, he’s a verification engineer. So his company will design a chip and he is responsible for determining if the design will work in practice.

Yep, his job is to check that the chip they’re designing will do what it’s supposed to do before they commit $$$ to have it manufactured. The company promoting the video make the software that he uses to do the verification.

People give him a design for a SoC (system in a chip) which will conaist of cpu, dacs, memory etc and his job is to verify that design, i.e. point out where the bugs are.
It is complicated because it is a physical design involving millions of transistors and interconnects, a particular combination of instructions might not work because of length of the interconnects etc.

soc = system on a chip
