Wanting to service my Rockshox Totems and Pikes, so need some 5 and 15wt.

Having difficulty finding decently priced full synthetic suspension fluid (especially locally), are there any other alternatives? Seen people using simple engine oil, will that be OK?

    Clicky Oil

    Try here for Rockoil SVI

2.5 to 15wt oil, 1ltr for the price of most 600ml.

RS 5wt is 16.1 cSt @40C so you need something close to that and as Red Line is some of the best suspension fluid you can get I recommend their Lightweight fluid which I’ve just used in my Reba’s damper > http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60183-red-line-lightweight-suspension-fluid.aspx

If the 15wt is just for lubrication then use what ever fork oil you can get or fully synthetic engine oil like Mobil 1

The motorbike shops I’ve rung so far only have mineral oil, not fully synthetic? Will that be suitable?

    yes.

Fully synthetic would be better in the damping system.

I use rock oil or silkolene fork oil from motorbike shops. Have done for years across Fox, Marzocchi and RS – all perfectly fine.

Unless you are rebuilding the damper unit you can use car oil in the lowers. Its just for lubrication of the lowers.

This is from the Enduro sSeals instructions for the Fox 36 talas rc2. Not sure what fork you have but you should check out the tech section here…

    Enduro Tech

    “32) Inject 15cc of multi-viscosity fully
synthetic motor oil into the bottom of
    the TALAS side fork leg…

    …The multi-viscosity, fully synthetic
motor oil we chose to use is made by
Amzoil®. Any other reputable brand is
    acceptable. Note that Fox recommends
damper oil. Damper oil is OK, but does
not stick to the parts as well as the
    mulit-viscosity synthetic motor oil.”

So enduro seems to think it is fine, even preferable.

You only need to use fine tuned weights of fork oil in the damper unit itself. Are you rebuilding the damper unit?

    Cheers all.

Anyone know if Stendecs stuff is synthetic/OK?

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=112

Also, does the actual damper hold fluid, or does the fluid just go “around” it? Just a little confused after reading SRAMs tech pdf, seems that you only add the 120ml of fluid back in after you’ve refitted the damper unit?

I used the Stendec oil from CRC in my Reba’s when I serviced them last year , still going strong under my bulk.

The person I bought my Magura Thors off used engine oil. I found this out a year later when the forks went for a service and all the internals had perished, causing excessive wear on the stanchions. Which was a nice expensive surprise….

i’m currenlty using Silkolene oil in my pikes, I have the stiffer spring installed so i have gone up a weight over standard to help the rebound out.
