  • What cheap, old standards, 29er full suss race frame?

After a bad crash (broken rib, separated shoulder) I’ve decided steel rigid single speed isn’t great for racing for me anymore, so want to jump the other way – 1x and full suss – as cheaply as possible. So looking for a 29er full suss frame, L or XL, 90/100mm travel, that fits my existing 135mm rear wheel and straight steerer 100mm fox fork (fine if it is a tapered head tube so long as it can be converted to fit).

Light as possible, but alloy is not a problem if it’s a light XC frame, and as far under 500 notes as can be found. Second hand fine if in good nick. So what is out there – any end of line clearances, bargains you’ve spotted on the bay, old frames you’ve not got round to advertising etc?

I picked up a 2012 salsa spearfish for £275 – light enough, old standards, slightly old fashioned geo but ok. I’ve done ok at a few races on it!

Spearfish for 275 is a good start, was there a second one in L/XL?!

See the giant anthem thread, excellent frames.

You realise that now your crashes will happen at higher speed? 🙂

like my pivot 429c frame, not the lightest but copes well 24hr races or alps riding, seem to go fairly cheap, or many chinese frames can be had for that much but would need a shock

cp – anthem is a good call, just need someone to be selling a good nick frame only in XL now!

epicyclo – yeah, good point! I had thought it would mean I’d be less tired at technical sections, and if I went through at the same speed as on the SS, hopefully more in control…

c.klein87 – will look for those too – any idea of frame weight?

So far all I’ve spotted is an SC super light 29 frame, which at ~2.75kg, really doesn’t seem to be super light!

No-one got a good source of e.g. cheap canyon/cube/similar alloy 100mm XC frames?

Another recommendation for the Anthem X29. I’ve got a SC Superlight 29 frame for sale and, yes, it definitely ain’t Superlight! …… bit more suitable for normal trail riding than XC racing IMO.

I about to sell my Sultan for not very much in a bit, if you’re interested.

EDIT – Scrub that I just read you want it light.

Bowglie – it was your SC SL I spotted, but I think as you say it is closer to a trail than XC frame.

Scienceofficer – thanks, there are quite a few frames like the Sultan, SC SL etc around, 120 wish travel and 2.5-3kg frame, I’m looking more at 90-100mm travel and sub 2.5kg preferably…
