    Yes it seems to fit the bill (especially with coloured lights for nighttime map reading which he will find useful)

    Alpkit Gamma, but sold out.

    LED Lenser H7 or H7R if you fancy spending the extra £15…..watch out for copies.

    Happy LED Lenser H7 user here. But then not what I’d class as cheap, others may disagree, I think £1k MTB’s are expsnsive.

    At the cheap end I have a Energizer head torch which is really quite good for the money. Mine is the older version and was about 1/2 the price if this

    Fenix do a good one for £45, if you can stretch a bit firther, about 150 lumens, IIRC.
