   I'm nearly ready to take the plunge and order a Whippet but reading recent threads about the chainset/BB issues has made chainset choice more of an issue. I'm tending towards a double setup due to a) the BB fouling issue and b) because most of my riding is fairly flat and the Cotic handles away trip duties. However, there still doesn't seem to be great availability of these (at least not as groupset deals from Merlin and the like) - has anyone found a good source?

   Also, I'll be running it singlespeed in winter - is there any reason an XT double or similar shouldn't play nicely with a single ring?

   I couldnt decide either, so have been running a deore chainset with little ring off and 32/44, with 10 speed 11-36 on the back. Its great- thought i would need some shorter gears but the 11-32 is more than enough for short steep cornish climbs. still might get me a Middleburn chainset when feeling flusher

   I've got a triple SLX on mine. Did have one that failed on the BB area but that was an older XT version.

   Run a FSA double up front on mine but apart from that it's XT all round.

   The whippet is designed to run with a double chain set, any chain set with removable rings can be run as a double or a single.

   As luck would have it, the new XT doubles have just started coming into stock this week so I've bitten the bullet and gone for the M785 (38-26) - first impressions are very good, it looks ace and is a pretty good weight. I'm looking forward to seeing how it fares on the trail.
